When I had problems with my bounty hunter breaking I went and bought another MD @ $100 which didn't seem to work. So I devised a test that can be very useful in training.
Buy a box of kitty litter. If you don't have a cat, get the cheapest possible. Place the box in a place where you know it is clear of targets and open the top. Then put in targets at known depths. Change the orientation of the targets. That will give you the worst condition depths and let you hear the tones to expect.
A new coin in fresh dry soil is the toughest to detect.
Just out of curiosity - if you do this test or some similar, let me know about dimes. Dimes seem to rattle my brains when I run across them with the headphones on.

I get depths of 10 - 14 inches sometimes! Far more than any other coin.
By the way, the other MD didn't work at more than 1 inch. Back it went.
