Angry Grass etiquette??????

Came across a big beatiful soccer field (in a park) Had lots of hits but I was afraid to dig in the grass.
I've only been detecting a few weeks now and have shyed away from a couple spots because of grass.. All public (tax-payer) property, But Don't want to get someone mad (grounds-keeper), or get myself into trouble... What is the etiquette for this sort of thing???

Yup, you can dig carfully so you don't leave a trace of where you been. It takes practice just like the detectoring. Practice in a place where it don't matter till you get comfortable. There are plenty of sites on the net that talk about techniques. HH and don't give up

Watch some of the videos on cutting a plug and do a little practice. If the hit is shallow you may want to try just using a probe or a screwdriver and pop it out of the ground. I search in these types of areas all of the time and you would never know I was there. It just takes a little practice.

...and like everything else (when you practice) becomes easier and pretty much "second nature" after a while...you'll do fine!

I'm glad someone asked this question...as Minelab has seen for himself, my back field looks like someone has been using dynamite. I wasn't very good at pinpointing and my holes averaged about 12-14" - ever try replacing a 14 inch "plug"? Believe me, the last place I wanted to go was to a public place and try their fields!

But I got myself a brand new detector and have been practicing a little the last couple of days. I now have my holes down to 2-3 inches and find my items about 50% of the time without having to enlarge the holes.

So what everyone else says...PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!

and ...have fun!

I've been noticing a beautiful soccer field on my may to work so I stopped by this AM to MD it a bit. The stupid thing was Astroturf

How is the weather in your area? I don't plug in dry conditions and 99% of the time it is done in the Spring and Fall where the cooler, wetter times will help the plug recover nicely.

My advice is if you have a Target ID feature on your detector and you can pretty much tell if is jewelry or a deep older coin, then go for it. If not, I wouldn't take the chance of killing the grass just for some ordinary clad coins. Not worth the damage it may cause.

Talking Unfortunately

I can't tell if i'm hitting gold or a pull tab. Hav'nt got the depth thing figured out yet either. I'm new so I bought a "fortune Hunter" from Bounty hunter.. If anyone has some tips for this type of detector, Please feel free to tip...
I think I got it to discriminate nails, screws, etc... and still find gold, silver, clad, and of course pull-tabs. Auto-notch finds clad, jewalry, pull-tabs, and large (rusty) metals but not gold as of yet. Not sure if It's me or the detector...
