Default What depth is best??

Another "newbie" question . Maybe I already know the answer, but at what depth do you find old coins? Is there any standard, or should I dig everything? My Detector went "crazy" at the park I was at last weekend. I found change, keys, at 1 inch or less. I want to find older stuff. Is there any rule of thumb? Also which coil should I use? A double D coil or the standard coil that comes with my White's MXT?
Thanks
TklSafe

Most of my good coins are found with my XLT between 4 and 6 inches deep bbut I have only been doing this for 4 months. HH

Default depth

I would use a "DD" coil to help you with the high mineralization of Colorado soil. Coin depth on average will be between 4 - 6 ".

Anything below 1 or 2 inches should be old. But I would dig everything that sounds good... Buster....

There are stories of IH on the surface, and coins at 8 to 10 inches so sorry I have to say dig it all.

I agree with everyone about digging it all, you just never know, there are so many variables, and soil condition being one, with plenty of variables of it's own. You'll get a pretty good idea once at the site and see what you're getting and can adjust accordingly.

Can't help you with the coil decision, I would say that you should be fine with a DD coil, but I would have thought the standard coil was a DD? What type is the standard?

If the park you're detecting is real trashy, a smaller coil would help. I don't know the mxt but with alot of trash, lowering the sens. should help.

Congratulations on the finds that you did make and Good Luck with the rest of the park!

Dig everything. I have found great coins at every depth depends how long the coins are in the ground. Also on the ground conditions and the soil your digging. have fun and happy hunting.

I dig all my signals, and have found nice coins anywhere from 1 to 4 inches on average. It varies though. Good luck

Thanks for all the good advise everyone, to answer Minelabman's question, the White's MXT comes with an Eclipse 950 9" search coil. I can pinpoint down to a freckle with it. Learning the DD coil, which I know is better for prospecting, is harder to pinpoint with this coil. I guess I have a learning curve with this coil. But fun?? I believe this is even better that playing scratch ticket lottery games. After the investment, it pays off many times.
Thanks TklSafe
