Good points all. I took some of my finds that I had gotten while living in Dover Deleware today to work. I showed them the 1900 quarter, 1895 V nickel, rings, braclets, charms, tokens, and anything else I had in my plastic bag. There was a few jaw drops and a few--You dug that up. I want to get my good friend to start hunting with me. He will when he gets some time. Baby is due in a month. But yes it is a good hobby and not everyone understands it or likes it. Thing is you have to do what you like and not worry about the rest. It is good to pull out that Indian head or that Barber and show them off. Not bragging but showing. They see and they get the message. good work on getting hubby into diggin..Happy Hunting... Buster,,,,,,,

I think I am intimidating because nobody says anything to me. At least I don't notice it so I am lucky.

Hey Riki try real hard not to sweat it. I know it is hard at times, and sometimes it seems pointless. Do not let them get the best of you. Most people that give you the real hard time will not understand any way. They tend to not listen when you try to explain.

Keep your head high, and keep hunting, Beale.

I tell them that it is one of the few hobbies that gives you something back instead of just taking your money.

Most people that I talk to find it interesting. If they criticized it, I would ask them what their hobbies are, if I don't already know. People watch sports (a few hours in front of the boob tube getting all worked up), play golf (expensive way to chase a ball), go to movies, bars, etc., they enjoy their hobbies and you enjoy yours, and like Steve said, this one pays, while most others cost.

All said very well here!!! I have one that really gives me a hard time about my hobby...I just let it roll...and sometimes just get that detector and shovel and keep on diggin with a smile each time I pass them!!! This hobby has well paid for it's self...And that was not my intention...Just very curious as to finding something from the past and happened on some gold and those shiny stones make it even better...This is something I know and I don't really care what others think...They really wow...when I show them the rings I have found in the past...And get really interested in all the old items I have found and love hearing of them...

Picking and complaining can become a hobby for some...They can just keep that hobby...I will keep mine...

To each his own!!!

Has kept me in great shape...great exercise!!! A money maker and a wealth of enjoyment!!!

Keep on diggin!!!

I bring out my finds and they take look at a couple of Morgans and some rings and some of the different coins and they suddenly become interested. Its easy to knock something you don't understand. Hang in there Rikki- your amongst friends.

Riki:
I guess I am too excited about the hunt. I have talked about it to my buddies at work, and some want to come along. Truthfully don't understand why they want to come along, not real fun just watching I would think, but to each their own? Riki, don't sweat the small stuff, life is what you make of it. Enjoy what you do and if others don't it is their loss. Good luck and good hunting.

I think most people just don't understand it. We tend to question things we don't understand. For instance, another of my hobbies is sweepstaking. People have teased me about that one too. I admit I haven't really started metal detecting on the level I would like to (although I do plan to), but the little bit I have done has been great fun, even when I don't find anything. With sweepstaking, I have won quite a few little things, and now I have won two hockey tickets along with a chance (odds 1 in no more than 200) of winning a $350,000 house. I have other hobbies that I enjoy too, like reading, doing puzzles, watching movies, etc. But I have to admit, the dream of a big payoff does make metal detecting and sweepstaking more exciting than the other hobbies! Don't let what others say bother you. Do what you enjoy. And, when the mood stikes, rub their noses in a find or two!

Barbara
P.S. I think with sweepstaking some people (not my real friends) are kind of waiting for me to say, "Oops, it was a scam and I didn't really win!" LOL
