I just show them my collection. It usually then becomes "cool... you found all this?"

Hi Riki,

Sounds like your family likes to prod you just to watch you squirm for answers. It seems they don’t really care what you say they just enjoy pushing your buttons.

Next time take that power and control out of their hand by answering their question with a question.

If I were a lady I would say something like, “That was rude, are you deliberately trying to hurt my feelings? I don’t make fun of you do I?”

Then watch them shrink back and squirm for appropriate words.

Suddenly making fun of Riki’s hobby is causing them pain instead of pleasure, and they will probably think twice before they put themselves in that situation again.

Since this is a family forum I won’t print what my verbal response would be if anyone ever laughed at my hobby. Being a 6’4”, 240lb. ex-Marine I have a rather short fuse and quick response for ignorant people.

HH,
Dave

Hey Everyone:

Thanks for the responses. I do my best to let the comments just roll off - most of the time I'm successful. Heck - I got the most ribbing from Joe initially (he presented me with an eye patch and a fake parrot) but now he's got his own detector LOL

But I've got a reputation in my husbands family for being a little bit "different" - I mean, how many people here can claim to be Wiccan and study mythology and the paranormal? (Well, except for Jack and his bigfoot - which I honestly can't dismiss as a possibility) - so I guess they figure anything I undertake is cause for humour.

And doc...I may be a lady...or at least female...and only 5'4 (we won't discuss pounds LOL) - but I've got a short fuse and a sharp tongue, too. Just trying hard not to lose one and use the other LOL

Well, let's see... I've been into Ham Radio for 12 years, dits and dahs are cool when they are coming from the other side of the world. I love to go hunting but don't actually enjoy taking animals any longer so I don't shoot at them when I find them. Even bought a new shotgun this year so I'm better equipped to not shoot ducks. I enjoy metal detecting in old camp sites and deer camps where about all your going to find is rust that were small pieces of peoples lives. I believe in Bigfoot. I believe in ghosts. I believe that when I'm in the woods I surrounded by things that can't be explained if your only looking with your eyes and not your heart.
I take a lot of shots across the bow for my beliefs cause I don't hide them. I really don't give a **** what anyone else thinks and the only one I have to impress is me..
Dropped by a friends house one day after detecting. He looked in the back of the truck and asked what I had been up to after seeing a bunch of rust. Told him and he started laughing, "What a waste of time, all ya got was a bunch of cans and a old wrench"
While I had been in the woods detecting an old camp, watching a couple hawks, and just enjoying being out he had been sitting on his butt watching Judge Judy, now WHO was wasting time?
Hey Riki, they don't know who much fun their missing not being us...

I think that's the key, right there. People have become so accustomed to just watching TV instead of getting out and doing something that WE're the freaks. TV used to be a privelage, not a past time. Now it's a babysitter and evil. Now, I do love TV, and I have to drag myself away, but I would never begrudge someone else the right to get outside and enjoy nature. Jealous people make fun. That's my opinion.
