About 10 days ago I read a post which listed old military forts by state. It was helpful to me and I was wanting to go to the site again, but I can't find the post again. I've looked every where on the forum without success. And I can't remember who posted it either
Can anyone help me out in locating this post?? Thanks everyone and HH to all.Loadmaster (Ed) PS-I just know its right in front of my face, but can't find it. |

Hi Loadmaster
While your running around that great state of South dakota,, Checkout Woonsocket !!!! My Grand Mother was born there is in the late 1870's ,, Im sure the name of the place was changed,, at the time it was in dakota county but the county lines have been changed . Her name was Bertha Dakota Smith ,, supposedly by family folklore the first white girl child born in that county !!! but who knows ??? The Family lived there until My grand Mother was 12 and then they moved back to Nebraska which is where Her parents had lived before after coming from Pennsylvania,, I have the research on this stuff some place, I will post ot when I find it, so many family history papers !!!! Rick

Hi Rick,
Thanks for that information. I always enjoy bits of history. Woonsocket is still very much there. Its in Sanborn county now and is only about 65 miles north of me here in Menno. The town itself is pretty much history, but this time of year many roadside shops are set up selling all kinds of produce. Some of the best watermellons are grown in the Woonsocket area. Beautiful country too!! If I could help you out with any family research in that area, please let me know. Would be happy to drive up there for research or photo taking for you. Thanks again, Loadmaster (Ed) |
