Hi Kenneth

I usually look up old county maps many of the homesteads are marked on them, you can try this link http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/gmdhtml/gmdhome.html

many times the old railroad maps can help also !!

search the web for your county might surprise you what can be found by searching old news print, and historical family names !!

Lightbulb do not know where you live...

..but if it is any help i have been finding old home sites on maps from the official records of the civil war but have yet to find them on the ground.i am guessing the stone from them may have been reused on other projects over the years. old state & county maps may help too.

Default Plat Maps!!!!

Go to your local library or historical museum and look for the plat map books. You'll find that there are more sights within a twenty mile driving distance than you could cover in your lifetime.

I just hunted a homestead that burnt down in the '30's. Found a mint 1903 barber dime and a few indian heads. Nothing around but an open field, broken glass and nails.

HEAVEN!

You can use old topo maps to help pinpoint old homesites, also i look for plants that are growing out of place, one example is perrywinkle, this was used quite often as a groundcover around old home sites good luck !
