I have owned a "White 4000/D Coinmaster" for about 20 years. I recently purchased a used (cosmeticly in perfert condition) a "White Spectrum XLT". I don't think it was ever used. When I do the ground balance it is fine when it tells me to hit ENTER with the coil waist high, when it tells me to lower it to the ground and hit ENTER, it then gives me about 6 quick beeps and the display says "unable to balance, Installing pre-set values."
I have taken it over to a friend that has the same unit. That one does the balance with no problems and reacts properly to different materials, silver, iron, nickel. Mine will not detect properly or indicate what the item is but my friends under the same conditions does. I read the book cover to cover, Did I miss something. Thank you for any information to get my XLT working. Lowell Last edited by Lowell; 12-07-2005 at 01:17 PM. |

Hi Lowell
Have you tried setting up a custom program ? I dont have an XLT ,but I use an Eagle Spectrum, My Users Guide gives several Pro Option custom programs that allow you to set custom Discrim, modes and oly require that you use the trigger to access programs saved in your custom program menu. Ive never experianced what you are describing unless I set my loop down on metal or highly mineralised soil. then I just moved a bit and retried the GB menu. Rick

Hi Lowell,
If batteries are OK then perhaps you have either a bad coil connection or bad coil. Recheck the connection at the control box and check to make sure there are no beeps ,squeals or clicks while touching the cable or connections. Perhaps your friend wouldn't mind using his coil on your detector to check balancing and if it works ok it's your coil. Hopefully that will work. Good Luck, HH Bill |

Thank you for your comments, I went to a local White dealer in Quakertown PA, he tried a new coil and it worked as it should. I took the unit home without the new coil thinking I could find a bad connection somewhere. I could not find one. I went back to the dealer and purchased a new coil.
Thanks again for your help. Lowell |
