Default Which detector?

Friend of mine has gone out with me a few times and is hooked. He's on a limited budget so needs a good detector for under $300, the more under $300 the better. I was thinking Ace 250 after reading several posts about it. I don't want to start a war here and this thread has probably already been beat to death but any suggestions from you folks would be helpful. I'm an MXT user, only detector I've ever had and I'm very happy but the tag on that one is long yardage for him right now. Thanks for any suggestions

Hi Bob

warsawdaddy gave an excellent website for used detectors and many of the posts are from hardcore traders who buy and sell detectors like many buy coffee at Dunkin Donuts. Most are very reputable folks and i have made several very satisfactory deals. They have a feedback forum also to check out prospective buyers and sellers.

There is really not much negative regarding the Ace 250 as a general purpose detector but it really depends on the primary intended purpose before a comparison could be made.

I have a Minelab Advantage and in my opinion and many others has depth capabilities to rival many top line detectors and has a great discrimination circuit. It's a superb Relic and Coin detector if one is willing to let the beep and dig be the discrimination circuit. Saw a nice used one for $225. Mine is not going up for sale soon if at all.

Another great detector that can be bought used in excellent condition for about $275 is the Whites Classic IDX Pro. This detector has a meter and will ID Targets in all metal mode where many detectors can't. It is a single tone detector and probably has one of the best discrimination circuits ever designed. What i really like about the Whites detectors is the vast array of coil options for various hunting scenarios.I have a modified IDX and just love it.

I've never used Tesoro but i'm wondering if a Golden U max might be considered as it has 4 tone ID and very lightweight.

So many detectors and so little time and everyone has an opinion but it all boils down to what type performance you need for various conditions and not what's cheaper.

If price is the only option get an ACE 250. HH Bill

Thank you very much for the info and the link, both a big help. My friend had never detected or spent the day playing in a can dump before. Couple of trips out and he's hooked, in fact he's already suffering from the "There's snow on the ground, Oh No" effect.. Thanks again Bob
