Default Laws regarding relics and finds

Does anyone know of a place on the net that I can check to see what the laws are regarding metal detecting in NY? I did a google search but most of the information I found was on using metal detectors in airports and court rooms etc. Thanks for any info you can give me.

JoAnne,

It's tricky to find pertinent answers to that question online.

But, always keep in mind that all national memorials, monuments, historic sites, battlefields, etc. that are recognized by the federal government are off-limits (period). And, they are not lenient about enforcement or penalty.

The same could be said for most state owned property. There are possibly a few exceptions, but you would have to ask property management/rangers for exact details, location, and permission.

You would probably have better luck asking private property owners. But, if it is near a historic site, they may also choose to keep the area closed. Also, most of those locations were likely hunted out years ago.

A few suggestions: If you live in a rural/semi-rural area, ask some of the local old-timers if they remember hearing stories about picnic groves or places where the carnival used to set up. Then try for permission. It's surprising how many of those places are out there.

Good luck!
Ed
