Default New Detector?

Many years ago I built the metal detector kit produced by "Heathkit". To me, a novice, it seemed to work quite well. Many years past and so did the "Heathkit" and I subsequently purchased the Garrett "Freedom Ace". That too, seemed to work O.K. intermittently, but when working, seemed to be O.K. (Recently, I sent the detector back to Garrett for repair, hopefully, it will be O.K. when I get it back.)

I am seriously considering purchasing a new detector, specifically the Garrett "GTAx550" and getting back in the hobby. I live near the New Jersey shore and most of my detecting will be in search of coins, jewelry and relics.

I would appreciate any comments and/or recommendations.

Thanks,

DaveB

Hi and welcome. I would go with the 550. It's a decent detector for the money. Probably should have not had the Ace repaired though and put the money toward the new detector Let me know if I can help you out in any way.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully, the cost to repair my old detector will be nominal. I probably will go ahead and get the GTAx550 in the near future.
