Under the ground vs. On top of the ground

Does a coin being in the ground, give a different signal than a coin laying atop the ground. I noticed when I dug up a coin, it was approximately 7-8 inches down.

When I was practicing techiques with my metal detector, I layed a quarter on the ground and tried to pass the detector over the top of it by about a foot, but didn't get a signal.

Does a coin being under the ground help the detector to see it from a farther distance.

Am I making sense

Two answers here: A). a long buried coin is easier to find than one that has not been there as long. Possible Halo effect can come into play. B). A deep coin or one on edge can read lower than normal.

Geeze Boobie - that is the first time I have heard halo effect explained that made sense. Thanks for sharing. Sometimes people use terms that us novice detectorists are not familiar with. Thank you for putting it in a way that we can all understand. JoAnne
