Default Parks permission experience

I'm just looking for personal experience when it came to requesting and receiving permission from parks.

Basically, I believe, within a state you have 4 types of parks;

1. National Parks (federal jurisdiction)

2. State Parks

3. County Parks

4. Municipal Parks (city or town)

I'm still researching on line, but what has anyone done to detect on these properties? I almost assume National Parks are out, unless you get permission to voluntarily detect and turn over what you find.

I'm sure in all instances you need to get permission some how, or do you?

I don't want to get a fine, because "I didn't know" ain't gonna cut it.

Hey Don I can answer this one, about state parks in NY anyway. I contacted the DEC and asked how I got permission. I was told that I needed to fill out a permission slip and list the parks that I was interested in. (Different parks are governed by different DEC departments so need to find out which ones cover the areas you need. They sent me a form that needs to be filled out and returned to the DEC. The form listed several parks. I need to check the ones I am interested in (of course I will check them all even if I never use it). There does not seem to be a charge (however the local state parks that fall under the recreation department there is a $10 charge for each park so make sure you know which parks are covered by whom.) When I called about this the gal told me that you are only allowed to detect on the beach and only when the beach is open. (That seems crazy to me because makes more sense to do it when no one is around.) She also told me that during the winter of each eyar they purge their files so to not send in my request til the spring because it would just get thrown away (I called just befoer the parks closed for the season.) Hope this helps. I will be honest after the park closed it was open for local people to walk and hike etc and I did go in and do some detecting on the beach and the sites themselves. No one stoppped me. Happy Hunting. JoAnne

All i can say is before you hunt anywhere you should know the rules. I once hunted what i thought was an open County Park only to be confronted by a State Park Ranger who notified me that only the parking lot and ballfield was county land and the rest of the complex was State owned and off limits. Every site is different and ain't worth getting in trouble over so do everything to learn the facts before hunting. HH Bill
