Hi mwssr - Thank You very much for the in depth response. Everything you say makes perfect sense, and I do intend to bench test and see the different readings. I think I really need to familiarize myself a lot more in that area. Our Florida plans are on hold right now partly do the cooler weather down south and partly due to the near blizzard conditions up north. Right now we have about 3 feet of snow with a forecast of more to come. Time to rev up the ole snow blower.

Default Your Florida Vacaction

Tony
Thank you for your reply. I managed a computer service bureau when we lived in Florida for 2 1/2 years so I am somewhat familiar with the Lauderdale north to Jensen's beach area. I didn't metal detect then (68-71) but I keep
reflecting on the area going north on a1a as you leave Jupiter/Tequesta
going north to Jensen's beach. That area was virtually deserted back then
and you would see sand roads leading to the beach which were probably
made by teenagers or fisherman. Once on the beach you could most likely
look up and down and not see a living soul. If I ever got back to this area
that is where I would detect. There would be few modern day coins and a
good possibility of getting old gold or silver. If you should get lucky and find
an old gold coin in Florida DO NOT tell anyone. A few years back I read an article about different people who constantly found gold coins on isolated
Florida beaches where shipwrecked coins washed ashore. They soon were followed by others and one was murdered and others beaten and robbed in
unrelated cases. I doubt you'll get to an area like this, but be careful if
you get lucky. The person who told you to bring a long handled shovel gave
you excellent advice, but should have described the shovel as a quality
womens or small bladed garden spade or shovel. Its long but light and the
metal part is strong and big enough to handle the sand without bending.
I tried a couple of the flimsy children's long handles but they bend from the
weight of the sand and are just thrown away. A good hardware store should carry them. They look the same as the large ones but the metal
bottom is just smaller - dont get a specialized one for cutting roots or
transplanting plants with a root ball of earth - just a regular one you can
easily carry with the metal shovel blade behind you to avoid any false
signals. Once again best wishes for a great vacation.
Marty

Enjoy the beach. Take your pinpointer. (important). I also have a sand scoop with a telescoping handle. Makes it easier on the back when I don't have to stoop over all the time.
