Default Hunting in the sand

I do a lot of hunting in good ole dirt, but being 30 miles from the nearest beach I don't get to hunt in sand. Well I plan on going to Florida for a week and I want to bring along my MD. I have a Whites XLT and I know it has a beach setting but is there a different way to hunt in sand vs dirt? I know I won't have to bring my Lesche or my Bullseye pinpointer and I did buy a sand scoop, any other suggestions?

I would absolutely bring a pin pointer , for the sand there are alot of small targets that are hard to find in the sand. Good Luck

I forgot to tell you I also use a regular Long handle spade shovel if the sand is wet but please make sure to fill the holes

Hi Tony...

I do most of my MD'ing at the beach and only take a scoop, of which i fashioned from a plastic coffee can, a small trowel, definately take the bullseye, a small brush, a towel, and the MD...I have a PrismV so I dont know anything about the settings for your XLT...I've been finding lots of coins, some trinkets, and some junk...I've found that most of the coins are buried around two inches or so, and some are very discolored and blend in with the sand, especially dimes...I hook the can on the side of my britches and carry my stuff in it...I go light because where I'm at, I have to walk close to a quarter of a mile to reach the better beach area...Hope this helped ya out a little, and good luck MD'ing...

Let me know when you will be here? If you are coming up to either Palm Beach, Pompano Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, South Beach, or Miami Let me know. I LIVE AT POMPANO BEACH AND TRAVEL TO THESE AREAS CONSTANTLY. I am not too experienced at detecting but would like to definitely have a buddy especially from treasurequest come over and detect with me. This is the only site that everyone is great! and would love to do a hunt or 2 if possible. Not too many people here from florida. I know a bit around here and I'm sure if we do not find too much at least we will have a great time! I know boobie says he will be coming during the summer and I am looking forward to his visit if he decides to take me on my offer FOR SOME DETECTING.

Thank You all for the quick response. I will take my pinpointer and Lesche with me. As far as filling in holes I am a stickler in putting things back the way I found it. When I hunt a park or a preserve you could not tell I was there when I'm done. I'm heading out to Clearwater beach, except my plans are on hold until I see those temps go up again. I know anything over 60 is better than 20 here in the Chicago area, but my wife is a sun goddess . I'm really excited about hunting in sand and even more excited when boobird said the finds are about 2 in down, I'm assuming thats one scoop. I could cover a pretty good area in a small amount of time. I will let you all know what I did when I return, and thanks again for your advice.

Default Detecting on a ocean beach

Get to know your detector so you function like its part of you. For instance
get all of your wifes gold jewelry together and see where the gold registers.
I have read numerous times to always dig a pull tab reading and you will find more gold. I have two Fisher CZ6's and when I bench tested all of my wifes gold jewelry it ALWAYS registered as Foil. I have found gold jewelry and it always registers as Foil, but once in awhile the gold rings will jump around on pull tab, nickel and foil without any pattern. I don't recall digging anything but a gold ring when this happens. From time to time I will dig a lot of pull tab readings in an area where I get a lot of dimes and penny hits. But contrary to what I've read I have NEVER dug gold from a pull tab hit. The gold has always been from a Foil reading. So test your detector and know what to expect - it can save time and disappointment. Pennies can also drain your stamina and interest. The CZ6 distinguishes between the older copper and newer zinc pennies which is a tremendous help, so see if you or your detector can avoid digging the Zinc pennies.
Pay attention and learn from the trash finds as well as the good ones
in relation to your detector and you'll enjoy it more and make it easier.
For instance I don't ground balance my CZ6. I have learned that its always
going to be set between 6 or 7. I always search Topsail Island NC in salt
mode because I don't spend any time researching and don't want to search
private property inland. I hope this little bit of info is helpfull and would be
interested in how your beach hunting in Florida worked out.
