Default "For The Pro's"

OK...This is for any and all the pro's that can give me some feedback on the Whites PrismV...I was just glancing through some of JoAnnes questions about her PrismV...And you guys impressed me once again..OK here goes...I'm New at this MD'ing...I've been to the beach maybe 6 times since i've started...I've come across a couple circumstances that kinda have me puzzled...?...One time, as I was close to the water, but on fairly dry sand, I got a good signal both ways...I put the pin point on and got a loud screeching up and down sound like a kazoo...and it covered an unusally large area, so I start digging and about 6" down I come across this large hunk of metal about a foot long and 1" thick...when i finally got it out...it looked like a cut off hunk of a forklift fork...Then a few days ago I was down there again, and got the same sound while in pinpoint mode, and said to myself...oh nooo not again!!!...Turned out to be a nickle, a NEW nickle...I rescanned the hole, and nothing..that was it...the nickle...I discriminated out nails, foil, and pull tabs...A little later on..same kazoo sound...But this time it was a beer can about 4" down...Everytime I hit the beach, and when I get a good signal, instead of hurrying up and digging, I take my time and check out the different settings, pinpoint to where I get the loudest sound and 9 times out of 10, I'm on the money...I vary my sensitivity, but normally keep it at 4 or 5 clicks from the bottom left...and EVERY time it tells me there's a dime or quarter, its ALWAYS on the money with the correct coin and depth...Alot of times the pennies are pull tabs, and the nickles...?..well..I wont even mention them.. lol...And it
amazes me, that the other day i got a fantastic signal both ways...dug down a bit...couldn't find anything...Then I checked the small piles of sand I put aside, and low and behold with the help of my bullseye, I found what looked like a small, 1/2 inch long, flat piece of a pull tab, and THAT was all that was in that hole...Figure that one out!!! one more question before I end this novel...the VCO feature..(Voltage Controlled Oscillator)...Whites didn't mention it in their CD, but did explain it in the instruction manual...BUT...it just doesn't register in the ole pea brain...I'd appreciate it if one of you guys could explain it in layman terms....Thanks for your time, now go take a break..lol... P.S. OH, I'll have more questions later on...!!! Thanks Guys...

Hey Thanks for you input there Ranger, I appreciate it...Thats why I kind of favor the beach...The first place I went to was a combo Park/lake where I used to live when I was a kid...Well...the beach area is now a forrest...The walking trails are for people walking their dogs, and the ball field...ahaaa, the ball field, I want to get permission before I hit that though, they do have a Park Ranger riding around checking things out...Oh by the way..the forrest has PLENTY of tree roots and buried beer cans too...catch ya later....

Post V.C.O. explaination

Hi Boo, I'll try to take a stab at explaining the V.C.O. feature on your detector.(grab a cup of coffee)...on me.. I'll have to use the DFX version of the explaination though, because of not owning a Whites Prizm V. Okay here goes...
_____________________________________________
V.C.O.
Voltage Controlled Oscillator produces a higher
pitched tone the stronger the target becomes. (centered on the coil) In other words...it aids you in pinpointing a target faster, by becoming Louder through your headphones or speaker the closer to centering the target on the coil.
Voltage Controlled Oscillator is a feature that will
only work in the non-discriminate modes. (or when you try to Pinpoint a target) When it is ON, the stronger the response the higher the
pitch of the sound. An excellent aid in pinpointing,V.C.O. will only function when the trigger is squeezed for pinpointing when activated in a discriminate mode. It will function full time in the non-discriminate (ALL-METAL) modes.
D.C. SENSITIVITY settings will dramatically
change the performance of V.C.O. D.C. SENSITIVITY
settings above a level of 35 may peak the
audio pitch too soon to allow V.C.O. to be useful.
D.C. SENSITIVITY settings of 35 or below (lower
numbers) are recommended, particularly in trashy
areas where targets are close to each other.

Tips - The best aid
available for pinpointing.
Also can work well in
combination with MIXED
MODE to more easily
indicate when the nondiscriminate
channel is operating.

Hope this helps you to understand this Pinpointing feature on your detector..

HiYa XOX...

Hey...Thank you Moocho for your help and for that very informative link also...Your right, it hit the nail right on the head...Wow, I posted this thread almost a month ago and am finally getting responses...Since then I've been back to the beach 4 or 5 times up until about a week ago with this cruddy weather...But I try to learn something new each time I go out, and when I get a good signal going both ways, then pinpoint the area I move it very slowly til I get a steady, loud sound, and 9 times out of 10, I'll be right on the target...From what alot of these experienced guys are saying, I try to listen to what that dawg's trying to tell me...I'll keep on putting it together and one of these days everything will click right along...and that PrismV IS an awesome machine....thanks again...

Hi Free...

Well, its like this...lol...I have tried the all metal mode, and so far i've collected a few rusty nails, beverage cans, a lipstick case, and what appeared to be a hunk of a forklift fork, all of which were low pitched sounds, and keep in mind I am going through the learning stages, but feel that I'm getting better at this game, if the weather would only give me a chance... ...There's miles and miles of beach area to hit, and I've been slowing down trying to absorb as much as I can about the whole picture...What that detector's telling me, depth, sounds, pitches, signals etc etc...the whole nine yards...And one day i'll get it... ...Thanks for your reply...
