Hi, new here...been looking throught the sight...great place. I especially like the 'finds' pics. Here's how I spend the winter doing research and it's a little different, but really pays off. I go onto Ebay and look for old postcards from my area. There are some great 100 year old cards for sale with awesome picures of how things used to look. Last winter I found a card of an unknown park from the 1800's........searched and found it. Most of it was now a small shopping center but there were still some old trails in the woods and an over grown water bubbler. Found a lot of old coins and a Mickey Mouse watch. Recently found a postcard of 'the old ice skating place'.......went there last week and found silver within 2 minutes. You can find pics of old homes, farms, fairgrounds ( the best ), the list goes on and on. Give it a try. Good luck!

I do a lot of research no matter what time of year it is because down here in Southern Utah it doesnt snow and if it does it warms up enough that it melts by noon.
A lot of people think the library is a good place to do research but i strongly disagree with that! First off when doing research you need to find an area of interest:Parks, ballfields, old homes, old swimming holes, Ghost towns, civil war sites, skirmish sites, cellar holes, beaches ect ect. I like to hunt ghost towns so the first thing i do is locate them via the web and then i do a geneology search on the folks that used to live in the town and when i have done that i look at newspaper archives believe me there is a wealth of info there. After i am done with these 2 steps i generally have an idea of what, when, how and why After i am done with these 2 steps i try to find a map of the town and or a plat map when i have these key items all that is left is obtaining permission and off i go.I have found that those of you that live in really old historical places like the east coast have things like really old mills and bridges and many other historical places and have a harder time finding them than we do out here. Well here it is. Most of the time if you are looking for something say a mill for instance the only way i have found any material on those is by old newspapers or word of mouth from relatives that have heard of the mill that i am looking for and in some cases there is no trail at all it is like the place just vanished into history. Enough of the boring chatter. Just remember that the key things that you need is: Newspaper Articles Maps geneology records ( most of the time this is free and fun ) and in some severe cases a visit to your local historical society This is how i do it and i have a lot of fun with it. Have fun and good luck this winter. HH rustycoinUT |
