What Boobie and EPC said, I'd like to hear the rest of the story also, is it called anything special that we could google it?

Totally! I'm sure there were some people in the rally rollin' their eyes every time that thing went off. I know it's a tragedy, but I bet those two were a load of trouble...

Great story and I too would love to heat the rest. A lesson to all, listen to your elders. Thanks for sharing.

the cannon was actually probably made out of bronze or less likely, brass, since it didn't spark. I don't know where bronze shrapnel would show up in metal detectors...tin? Brass? halfway between?

That is a great lesson! I grew up next to where the Battle of Natural Bridge was fought and consequently I was raised around civil war relics - cannons and entire cannon balls being some of the biggest items found by my grandfather - and we were always taught to respect them, even tho they were old as the hills!

Where'd you dig up this gem of a story? If you find a good spot for it online, you can submit it as a link to Treasure Hunting - A Metal Detector Enthusiast's Guide <-- it's a new blog site that we're sponsoring and there to keep track (and share with everyone) all kinds of news and stories like that. I don't think the site's done yet, but you guys can check it out if you want. That story will fit right in when you get more details!

So far I've found one very old license plate, a lot of nails, some funky green pennies and other misc. change.. but who's counting? I'm just here to have fun, giggle, and make friends along the way!

hello kellycochick thanks for the link,I found this story in a book on local history.I have 4 vol's full of short storys written by a man who once did a weekly article for the local paper.I havent had much luck finding anything online as most towns around these parts are quite small and not alot has been put on the web yet.I was planning on posting some here when i have more time and was hoping we could get some of the other members to post a few of there own.
