Default Yanks invade Oland's Hill

From the land of the Bluenose.....Oland's Hill once once part of the Old Sackville Rd which goes from a two laned paved road to a dirt road and finally tapers off to a path that only a small cart could traverse. Came across this spot when my former car "Quasimoto" was on it's death bed and I could only walk to digging spots as driving the old beast was not an option.

The hill at one time was a main throughfare to get to the one room school house and for those heading to Uniacke. Several foundations are still evident along the trail as well as tree stands for taking pot shots at deer during the "crazy season." Last summer I invited a few friends for a dig there and the usual circa 1920 Oosterman and Etter tokens, Trade and Navigation and Nova Scotia pennies where spirited from the earth all at the outer limit of depth for my old Garrett.

Recall going there a few days after Andy Angus and I had done the dew where we both netted some colonial tokens and finding seven silver coins in one hole. Man was I happy! Most were circa 1915 along with my first British shilling dated 1928. Of course had the crap scared out of me by a male pheasant who let me know that I was on his turf...too pretty a bird to shoot but great eating! Also eyeballed a few blue and one lime green bottle on that trip.

On the other side of the road is the private cemetry for the Olands who obtained the property in a deal with the province as they gave up some land for the then new 100 series provincial highways.

We can all relate to having a dig and then heading to the car sweeping in a lackluster and whimsical manner when I got a multi bell tone on the old Garrett. This was on a very mucky stretch of a side road and the old shovel made quite the sound as I extracted a shovelful and saw the glitter. Out popped these two babies which now reside in my collection.

Plan on returning there in the early spring as the place gets really muddy and the thorn bushes sure do a number on a bouy!
