Default Old Maps Where to find

I found what looks like the foundations of and old house maybe a saw mill on my property in Mississippi the Foundations cover an area of about 80' by 40'
the land has been in my family for over 100 years and no one knows of a building in that area. for the last 80 odd years the land has been used for comercial forestry. Anyone have any idea where I can find old maps that may give me some idea what this building was?
Its in Amite county if thats a help.
Thanks for your time.

Default Genealogy/Cencus Sites May Help

or how about cencus records for your city/township? Historical county maps from your County Heritage Museum or Library. If you own the land, check out land records at City Hall. Lots of ways to find out! Hope this helps. I love research!!

Adam gave you some good tips. Also try your county recorder of deeds. As far as I know, they never charge to access your own information.

There should be record of from whom your family bought the land. Such records would probably note any existing structures or commercial operations at that time.

Lots to be learned from deeds. Gotta' love chasing down those clues!

Good luck!

Thumbs up 1950's Aereal Photos

I found that you can get old aeriel photos from your local Farm Service Agency that help out when trying to find the location of old house foundations etc. You can often get a surprise when viewing them because of what you can see.

The aerials available here through the FSA/NRCS offices date back to the 1930's, here's the contact info for the local FSA office in Liberty, MS:

Try and find old county plat maps that show the buildings and land owners name. Can find them in libraries.
