Terry--

You need to look in the city directory for that town, assuming it was large enough to be included in one. There are a few city directories online, but your best bet would probably be to contact the library in the town in question and see if they will do a lookup. There are also genealogical mailing lists for this purpose. What town? John in ID

Default More info?

If you share the city/state, should be able to point you in a direction...if you even want to share the name of the person we might be able to help search for any online info.

If you live close to the town that you are researching...Make a trip by the REGISTER OF DEEDS OFFICE in that town. Usually they let you go into the vault and research anything that you want on your own. Land Grants, Deeds etc. Then if you find something they charge you to make a copy of it. All the items in the Register of Deeds Office are PUBLIC RECORD...PAPPY

Thanks Pappy it's looking like that may be my best bet.I have found that colgate university(in hamilton) ,if i can get permission should be a good spot to search as its been there for many years and permission shouldent be a problem as i work for a tent co. that supplys all there tents for there reunions etc.Now if the weather would just cooperate a bit i should be off to a good year,as i have researched all winter long to the point were all a dream about at night is treasure !!! Oh and i've been meaning to ask Have you ever been to upstate N.Y as i once new a guy called "pappy" that was a bodyguard for rockstars.

The library or courthouse should have the census data.I know our library has the census back to the 1900 and there for anyone to look at.(KCMO)

I first contacted the County Clerk's Office:

County Office Building
Room 130
284 Main Street
Schoharie, NY 12157
Phone 518-295-8316

They handle the deeds as well as the census data for those years, the most promising documentation there seems to be Grantee/Grantor books that would show if any deeds were granted to/from that individual. But, they don't do research for you, you would need to find someone to do that research or travel there yourself.

One local abstract company I contacted seemed to be easy enough to deal with and thought that basic name/address research on that person could be completed with a fee in the range of $25-$50. There isn't much of any guarantee that even if a deed is located in that person's name it would contain a specific address, it's only been in the last few years that specific street addresses were required in that county for all residents (due to 911 service). Any deeds from the 30's might just reference the person's name/city.

But, even if you don't find a specific address maybe that research would give you something more to go on, such as probate proceeding, leading to next-of-kin etc. That same family name is still in the area and it is thought they owned businesses as well as other property so it is always possible that there might be descendents still there and more property records to follow later if you choose.

The abstract company that I contacted was:

Schowright Abstract Corp
Attn: Gerald Wright
(518) 295-6111
281 Main St
Schoharie, NY 12157-2115

Hope that helps. Best of luck in your search.
