This is the state park. Now if you jump on the north fork of Two Bayous and follow it back east towards town you may be able to find ya something. From what I have read and what I have found this was the Feds escape route back towards town but several didn't quite make it. Stop aprroximately 1 1/2 to two miles from town where Two Bayous drop south and here is an unmentioned battle site.. More of a massacre to be exact. Seems the Confeds found it was like shooting fish in a barrel. This is the area the Yanks thought they were safe in and found out differenty. The wagon trains were approaching Camden from the west- south west direction and if you figure accordingly, it takes just a little to figure where they last camped at. Probably 10-12 miles southwest of Poison Springs. Possibly Spring Hill or just outside of there. I do know the Yankee population stayed pretty much to the east of the town because they were afraid of the Confeds coming at them out of the northwest. Also, Steeles main supply line went east of town then turned northward. This little map don't help much but I am digging for some more.

was this side of Fulton. Seems to be all indication of notes I have found but this is not confirmed. Seems I recall Fulton as being a layover spot. There and Spring Hill both are mentioned so this gives you a rough guess as to the direction the wagons were coming from.. I am sure most signs of campsites are long gone but check with the local nursing homes for some of the old timers who may recall more. I once found one who told me about an old cellar that yielded a small cache of CW era weapons right outside of Sherman Texas. There were 8 Enfields and two Remington pistols in it that are now in a private collection in Arlington, TX.

Thanks everyone for the 411. It is great to be getting into something new and having this much support from folks all around the country. I have always been a history buff, and metal detecing is just the icing on the cake. I am also researching a small skrimmish near monticello ar, Rough and Ready, I have located what I think to be an area where soliders camped, problem is that it is a gravel pit. So any info on this site would be helpful as well. Thanks again to everyone, anyone down in south arkansas that wants to take a newbie out give me a shout.
Thanks CDB |
