civil war records research question

Hello im trying to research a specific year and a specific county and state about a lost union payroll. I have names of the people involved including there rank and where the event took place. i would like to research deeper into official civil war records but am totally clueless on where to look and in what documents i should be looking. could someone possibly share some guidance with me on where i should look and in what records i should be looking into also what other places besides war records i should check out.

Have you checked the O.R.s yet? They are usually a lot to wade through, but there is a ton of info contained therein.

Try going here and using the search:

eHistory at OSU | The Official Records of the Civil War

Try out the peoples names as they would likely report the loss of payroll.
