Default ID Please: Unknown Quartz Crystal

Hello Friends,
I saw the post made by Hawk on the Amethyst Crystals he & his club have been diggin. It looks something like what I'm finding in the Buffalo River once it is exposed. These rocks are rough on the outside, usually with a hole to show the crystal inside. Some of these are still engulfed in the harder dark rock. These quartz rough stones vary in size. Can anyone give me a positive ID as to the name? Any information? is it a different form of Amethyst?
The scans shows the largest one found and I cut it open with a carbide cutting wheel (shown in two halves at the top of the group and by itself as close-up).
I like this section and I vote to make it a Forum.....YES!!

Thanks For Looking & Thanks For The Replies, Roger

Very Cool Roger, I used to pick up geodes that looked like these in
Wilson Co. TN. My family always called them weather stones,Im not sure why though. Very Cool for sure.

Thanks Terri, Rip & gordiesgirl! They are Geodes and I've heard of these many year ago....the purchased ones.....and didn't remember the proper name. Thanks for refreshing an Old Mind.......lol I thought they were Quartz Crystal but as this states from a Google search:
"The size of the crystals, including their form and shade of color, vary—making each geode unique. Some are clear as quartz crystals, and others have rich purple amethyst crystals. Still others can have agate, chalcedony, or jasper or minerals such as calcite, dolomite, celestite, etc. There is no easy way of telling what the inside of a geode holds until it is cut open or broken apart, however, geodes from any one locality usually have a more restricted variety of interior mineralization".
Well, I'll pick up everyone I see the next time I (we) go floating down the Buffalo River this year!

Thanks Again My Friends, Roger

Default Very pretty!

Those appear to be calcite formations. Sometimes they become exposed as the host rock (often limestone) erodes. In some case they break away from the host formation and make their journey alone.

If always loved crystals. They're magically-beautiful to me.

Thanks,
faaus
