Default Question from a new detector

How important is it to use headphones?

I am a veteran and after my time in the military when I am outside if I have any sort of distraction in being able to hear my surroundings I get pretty panicked. So if it isn't absolutely necessary I'd rather not wear them.

Hey Andrew, I put headphones on when I hunt, but I only cover one ear. It doesn't seem to keep me from hearing anything. I can hear everything around me.

Headphones help you hear what your machine is trying to tell you, but if you absolutely can't do the headphones, I'm sure you'll still be able to find stuff. It's just a tool to help you hear the tones better. Maybe you could find quiet areas to hunt so you won't need them. If you hunt at a beach, though, chances are you won't be able to hear your machine without them...good luck, though, and thanks for your service to our country!!

I refuse to wear those hideous things but some people swear by them.

I always use them, a good pair will help you hear the faint tones, block out ambient noise and lessen the drain on your battery (smaller speakers require less power), and keep your ears warm in the winter (and in the summer).

It just helps you hear those fainter signals, the batteries last longer and it is easier to ignore people if you want.....they think you can't hear them with the phones on. I understand why you don't want to and there is no reason why you can't go without as 'E' said she dosen't wear them. Good Luck.

Welcome to TQ! There is a company that makes headphones for just one ear, and they are suppose to be very good. That might work for you, I think the name is Rattler, and they are designed for metal detecting.
I hope this helps!

Great idea Sarge,

The Detector Pro Rattler's are the single headphone version of the Gray Ghost's. Headphones also help extend your battery life . Wouldn't be without em. HH Bill

The Rattler headphone is designed for the demanding professional electronic prospector and gold nugget hunter. Your safety in the field is crucial and we're sure you'll never want to use anything but the Rattler!
