Default Im stating to feel like Gollum !!!

Hi to you all,
At the moment i detect with the Minelab Excalibur II in Bermuda in the sea up and above head level finding gold rings when I'm lucky, but from around April of next year i'm going to be living in Decatur in Georgia, and on weekends heading for Maysville around about 30 miles from Dahlonega.
I do not no nothing about prospecting for gold, but i've got the fever already !!!
I need to do some kind of hunting to keep the blood flowing through my vanes.
This is where i get to my question.
Can i start by metal detecting for gold, if so what is the best detector for the job. Is this the best way to start trying to find the precious stuff, or are the better ways to find it.
Second part to question.
Where is it possible to detect in these area's.
I'm not after trying to find some one's favorite spot as i can appreciate its taken you years to find it yourself, i'm just after a head start, some one to point me in the right direction .
All your help if possible will be gratefully appreciated .

You could start by joining the Gold Prospectors Association of America (GPAA). Part your membership is a catalog with location of GPAA claims where you can prospect free of charge.

Howey, if there's gold there i'll find it !!!
I've found around 35 rings in Bermuda up to yet 12 gold, i will find at least 8 more gold before i leave, that's the target i have set myself !!! the count downs on.
Tides against me this weekend, but what you need is perseverance, and a certain amount of time.
Gold prospecting will definitely be my next challenge one i look forward too.

I used to live in south Georgia and traveled up to Dahlonega once or twice per year for a few years. There is a stream flowing through or near it, I cant remember the name of the stream but this is where most of the gold is. Im sure you can look it up on the net. There is a section owned by a local gold club and I was down there 6 or 7 years ago looking around when some people were down there with scuba gear and a dredge , they were finding a nugget in a crack in the rocks when I walked up and asked them about the area. Turns out I was on their clubs property but they were ok with it and asnwered my questions. You really have to be a member of that club or the other one mentioned in this thread to have access to the best areas for finding gold there. It is probably possible to find something off these private properties though but I dont know. I never spent enough time there to figure it all out but I suppose it is possible to find something in the non private areas but I am not sure. Finding the clubs and becoming a member is the best way to find any gold left in the area and they are the best source of information. Sorry I cant be of more help than that , I was doing more trout fishing at the time and just starting to get the prospecting bug when I moved to Ohio. There was some gold coins minted in Dahlonega that are not all accounted for , and they have some really good value if you can find them , some minted from Dahlonega area gold and some from gold brought in from california. Thats about all I know , I can give some pointers on where to do some trout fishing though

Thank you for information ohiochris, you no, trying to find out where to prospect is very hard if you've never done it before, but the information gained from the good people of this site, and the clubs in the areas of interest is all part of the adventure.
Ive got the name's of a few clubs now, and the information gained from there sites is very informative.
Now to the second part of of my question.
Is it worth trying to detect for gold in the streams or even on dry land, if so whats the best water proof detector to buy, or should i say your favorite weapon of choice for the job.

There are several forums on metal detecting for gold nuggets, you are already checking the TQ site - I suggest that you check out the gold prospecting forum at Find's Forum as well.

Cheers Mate,

PS Tide times really do suck this weekend.
