Default Am I doing something wrong?

Today I went out and did a backyard test. I buried 1 penny and 1 quarter at about 4" far enough apart to not interfere with each other. I had my V3 set on coin and put the RX gain at the recommended setting from the probe window. Batteries were good, ground balance was done properly.

It failed to find the coins even when I set the TX boost on and lowered the RX settings. I took my XLT to the same buried coins and it found them with no problem.

What am I doing wrong? I had the coin program on and the RX and TX were the only adjustments that I made.

What other adjustments should I have done?

TIA.
Silver.

Added note: I forgot to increase the discrimination, but shouldn't it pick up the quarter @ 4"?

Hmmmm. Even set at 1/1/1 it should pick up something close to the coil.

What is your...
  • Rx Gain
  • Discrimination Sensitivity
  • AM Sensitivity
  • Frequency
  • Filter
  • Spectragraph settings (is it on Intensity or Single Sweep?)
I'm sure you've checked your cables and, perhaps, another coil? Do you have a DX-1 attached?

You've tried the factory programs?

Is this a new V3?

Default New V3

It was made on 9-9-09 and bought it 3 days ago (Wednesday). I am useing the DD factory coil and have the following settings;
RX Gain:9 (recommended from probe)
Discrimination setting:80(stock)
AM:55
Freq:All three
Filter:10.0Hz High
And no idea what or where the Spectragraph settings are.

I did notice that when I increased the discrimination settings to 90 I was able to finally pick up the quarter @ 3".

I tried the analyze at ground level and got a straight line. I raised the coil about 6-8" and finally got a good hump.

I tried the factory coin program at first. I also noticed that when I would come to the end of a sweep the V3 would beep. I raised it up in the air and swept in the air it would beep at the end of a sweep also. It's possibly pointing to a bad coil????

Thanks for helpng me out!!
Silver

I do not have a V3. The symptoms you state, especially the end of sweep beep, indicates to me a ground balance problem.

Longshit here...I had a similar problem with my BHID...turns out it was the battery pack. So I tossed it and swap in the one from my XLT...worth a try if they are the same...good luck. I should mention that I went to eh Southeast White Distributor's to have it checked also...and I ended up trouble shooting the problem after a clean bill from them...

Yeah, certainly should have seen the quarter. Sometimes DD coils have a hard time seeing targets if the soil matrix is loose...extreme example would be wood chips. I doubt this is it, of course...sound like you need to swap out the coil and use the process of elimination.

I would restore your "coins" program from the "Library"
(pages 15 & 31 in the manual)
Not a simple restore, the actual library restore...

Then try again, it will be a good idea knowing that the program is not altered
prior to troubleshooting.

Okay, I restored all of the programs and went out hunting at a school that was built in 1952. I wasn't picking anything up because the screen was jumping all over the place. Soooo I pulled out the XLT and was finding coins finally.

I used the Coin, Coin/Jewelry and the high trash programs on the V3. After I got home I read the manual one more time and made some more adjustments. I chose the Coin program and changed the Disc. up to 90, kept the RX gain at the recommended level as suggested by the probe,TX boost off, I don't remember if I changed the bottlecap reject, used the 7.5Hz filter, turned VCO on, turned 2.5kHz normalize off, single sweep off(intensity on Beep?).

I went to the back yard and it finally picked up the quarter @ 3" but it was all broken up, I mean really bad! The analysis wouldn't give me the hump unless I picked the coil up about 8" off the ground.

I tried posting this last night (Saturday) but I kept getting booted to the sign in screen every time I hit the post button.

Anyway, any thing else that I missed? What would make the quarter so broken up?

I have one more day to play with it then the temps are going to be in the mid 30's for a high for the rest of the week so ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFULL.

Once again, Thank you guy's!!
Silver.

Oh, and before I forget, I did check the battery. As the Germans would say.....GUDENTIGHT!!!

Hi Silver - Yeah, Intensity is correct. What is your Bottle Cap Reject set at? That can make good targets appear jumpy. Running Disc. at 90 requires some clean ground...try 70 or 80. I think, in the end, if you still have problems, you might want to send it in to get checked. Did you try another coil?

HH!

Did you pull the trigger while pressing the Enter key and then pump the coil up and down 4 times FIRST? If you don't ground balance you WILL have problems.
I just want to make sure you are doing that every time you use the detector.
If you are still having problems you should take it to your local White's Dealer for some on site help. They can straighten things out in a big hurry. Plus if something is broke you might sweet talk them into a replacement part or perhaps a loaner. hehe.
