Default Newbie and wondering if I just got ripped off?

I recently purchased this at Radioshack.com:

Bounty Hunter® Tracker II Metal Detectors - RadioShack.com

After purchasing this,I found the Kellyco detectors website and thier reviews of certain detectors. Check out whats being said about this detector I have purchased

Bounty Hunter Tracker II Metal Detector for Kids - Kellyco Metal Detectors

"Children 10 and under...Not recommended for adults????"

Can anyone give me a real world, actual, first hand experience based assessment of this detector?

Im still waiting for it to arrive, and after reading the reviews I may send it back, unless I hear some better things about it.

IMHO if you find stuff with it than good for you. Learn it and it will quickly pay for itself. I started out with a BH similar to that and found stuff. Good luck to you, Beale.

many years ago i started with a low priced Micronta detector ( pretty sure thats what it was) that looked similar to that one. they will find stuff but they're probably not gonna get the depth and discrimination that a more expensive one would.

Your BH MD will find stuff for you. As has already been said - just not as much as a more sophisticated (read expensive) MD will (i.e. the deeper targets). I too started with a BH MD years ago when BH was a more respected name in the MDing community and made some really decent machines, IMO.

I started out with a $79.00 Bounty Hunter and learned a lot with it. You can always upgrade after you get going.

Default Bounty Hunter Detector

I've got a bh trackerII and It works good for me. I've found alot of clad with It, but my best was a 1898 Barber Half. I am gonna upgrade, looking at an Ace 250. Good luck I think you'll enjoy It.

Yeah i started out with a similar -type machine a couple years ago from Big 5 sporting goods and i did ok with it in my yard. I did find coins and alot of trash. Mine didn't have any auto discrimination and i had to ground balance it alot, but it did keep me interested in the hobby enough to go ahead and get a better machine so i picked up a Garrett Ace 250.

My two cents.
I was under the impression that Radio Shack had BH's that you could only buy from them. If that's the case are we talking the same detector that Kellyco is talking about. If it is the same it will still find metal, just not as deep and perhaps way less discrimination. It's an introductory Medal Detector, not the best yet not the worst. As far as did you get ripped off, only you can answer that in time. Just don't expect to to go out and have it pay for itself right away and you'll be fine.

I also started out with a similar detector and had a lot of fun with it. I found quite a bit with it and when using a set of head phones I was able to dig dimes at depths of 7", or so, once I got used to it... You certainly can't beat the price...
Good luck, & Happy hutning~

Think of this as an inexpensive initiation into the hobby. Don't expect too much from this machine or you will just get frustrated.
If after a month or so of playing with the BH, you find that you are really keen on the hobby then upgrade your detector and keep the BH as your back up.
If you find that after a month you don't like this hobby then at least you aren't stuck with an expensive paperweight.
