Default Detecting on a militaty installation

I live right outside the gates of a Military Installation: Fort Huachuca

Fort Huachuca, AZ - Visitors - History

I know its been deemed a National Historic Landmark

Is this an off limits location for Detecting? Are Military installations off limits in General?

Im wondering because theres ALOT of wide open spaces and ALOT of history on this post,im itching to detect, but am afraid of getting in trouble with post authorities

Can anyone compile a list of the yays and Nays as far as what locations are generally off limits and which locations are ok to go detecting in??

I live near a Military installation too. I can tell you that for an
"average" installation, people often hunt around barracks and such, but they are not supposed to. If you don't ask, but go ahead and hunt, chances are nobody will mess with you. BUT if you ask, you will probably get a NO. It's kind of a tricky situation.

If it is deemed a National Historic Landmark I would probably steer clear? Just IMO, Beale.

Several years ago I wanted to hunt on the base where I work so I contacted Base Security and they told me "no problem" as long as I didn't damage or tear up the areas where I was detecting. IF I were going to start doing that again, I would contact the Captain of the Base and get written permission to hunt. After 9/11 the MPs and Base Security can get mighty "touchy" about someone poking around buildings with something they might misconstrue as something other than a simple metal detector AND the tools I use for digging might/could be considered weapons vice simple digging implements. I would carry the permission letter IF obtained with me at all times. Now there is a lengthy beach at the base and people hunt there all the time. I would NOT hesitate to hunt there without permission since a lot of others do. In fact, I am looking forward to hunting that beach in the very near future!!

Areas denoted as Historic Landmarks are usually protected by law against things like MDing and the like, as are most State and National Parks. IMO:o)

Typical Archy bull$#!^. They conveniently left out that coins are not included in that list of banned items to dig up.

I personally like how an area that has no known historical significance is still considered an archeological site.
