Yesterday I took my new silver uMax out to search. I noticed that even with the discrimination knob set to filter out iron, it was still picking it up. I have the right knob set at around 7.

Also when I was out in a field where the was supposed to have been an old house I kept getting little blips and small signals. The only find was an old prong from a no till plow about 10" down. The field is a pasture and is rough. There are many thick old weed stems and heavy clumps of grass which prevented smooth swings close to the ground. How should I hunt this field?

Hey Woodturner, there are some U-Max users here so I'm sure someone will chime in. As to the field, I don't know how fast the recovery rate is on the U-max whereas with my Wilson I can go real slow and in very short strokes as to move around the stumps and or over the Clumps of grass. A Small coil may be better like the 5.75 HOT coil if that will work on the U-Max. If your hitting stuff at 10" thats pretty darn good. Don't know if this helps any but I'm sure someone else will pipe in.

Good Luck & HH

HI WOODTURNER, SINCE YOUR STILL GETTING RESPONSES EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE KNOCKING OUT THE IRON IT COULD BE THAT IT IS A LARGE PIECE OF IRON OR YOU NEED TO PUSH THE DISC. UP A BIT MORE. ALL THE BLIPS, CLICKS AND POPS MAY BE FROM MAGNETITE IN YOUR GROUND. I HAVE THAT HERE IN WEST TEXAS AND HAVE TO TURN UP THE DISC. A BIT MORE TO GET RID OF IT. BUT IT DOESN'T BOTHER ME PERSONALLY TO HEAR THESE NOISES. MAYBE THIS WILL BE OF SOME HELP I HOPE WOODTURNER. GOD BLESS AND KEEP ON SWINGIN! DAH DIT DAH.

Thanks. How do you find out what kind of soil an area has? I live near the Virginia coast. Our soil goes from very sandy, to sandy loam, to hard white clay.

JUST FROM READING WHAT OTHERS POST THAT ARE IN YOUR AREA IS A GOOD WAY TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR SOIL. BUT YOU MENTIONED CLAY AND USUALLY CLAY CAN BE PRETTY MINERALIZED. WHEN THE ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD ENERGIZES A VOLUME OF GROUND AND IF THERE ARE MINERALS THEY WILL GIVE YOU A RETURN RESPONSE CALLED FALSING. SO WHAT YOU MAYBE EXPERIENCING IS SOME FALSING ON YOUR SILVER UMAX. YOU WILL NEED TO TURN DOWN YOUR SENSITIVITY AND TURN IN SOME MORE DISC. THROW SOME COINS AND OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST OUT ON THIS GROUND AND SWEEP OVER THEM TO HEAR THE RESPONSE AT THE SAME TIME SET YOUR DISC. TO CUT OUT THE GROUND NOISE BUT KEEP IN THE COINS. JUST A SUGGESTION FOR YOU BUT EXPERIMENT A LOT AND YOU WILL LEARN THE INS AND OUTS OF THE SILVER. BY THE WAY YOU HAVE A GOOD LITTLE MACHINE THERE WOODTURNER. OK IF YOU NEED ANYMORE HELP JUST ASK. GOD BLESS. DAH DIT DAH.

JOHN TOMLINSON,CET

P.S. THERE IS A THING CALLED GROUND BALANCING WHICH IS A WAY TO COPE MUCH BETTER WITH MINERALIZATION. YOUR MACHINE IS PRESET INTERNALLY IN A POSITION THAT COVERS EVERYTHING IN GENERAL, BUT IS STILL NOT QUITE ENOUGH TO HANDLE BAD MINERALS.

HI HL, WHAT TINMAN IS TALKING ABOUT IS HOW FAST THE RECEIVER OF THE DETECTOR WILL RECOVER AFTER A DETECTION AND BE ABLE TO PICK THE NEXT TARGET. THE TESORO'S ARE A VERY FAST DETECTOR IN THIS SENSE. I THINK ONE OF THE FASTEST DETECTORS I HAVE USED IS THE MINELAB MUSKETEER. OK I HOPE THIS IS HELPFUL. GOD BLESS. DAH DIT DAH.

YOUR VERY WELCOME WOODTURNER!

IN THE RADIATION BUSINESS WE CALL THE RECOVERY TIME DEADTIME. SINCE THERE CAN BE MANY EVENTS IN JUST MICROSECONDS YOU WILL MISS SOME OF THESE EVENTS WHILE THE INSTRUMENT IS COUNTING A DETECTION. SO WE CALCULATE APPROXIMATELY HOW MANY PARTICLES STRIKE THE PROBE WHILE IT IS DEAD AND GET A REASONABLE VALUE AND CALIBRATE THE INSTRUMENT FOR THIS. OK GOD BLESS ALL. DAH DIT DAH.

Thanks, John. That might explain something I noticed with my Ace 250. I sweep and get a signal but then sweep again and get nothing. I had assumed it was due to a deep target. I've noticed that if I sweep a third time, I may or may not hear another signal. Hmmmmmmmm, something to experiment with.

Thanks again for the reply.
