Default Odd token!

This is the oddest token/coin thingy I have found. I am guessing that it a commemerative piece. It says " Jamestown Exp 1907 Cap. John Smith" and a pic/likeness of him on the front and "United States of America 1907" with a pic of what looks to be an Indian head. Kind of a neat find anyway. Got some age to it anyway!
Best Regards to All,
Travis

Elongated penny is what I thought as well...but it would have to be the best elongated penny done that I have ever seen. No trace of the original penny markings on it! And no I could not have done it as I was not alive in 1907!!!!!! LOL!

Most of the machines used to make elongated pennies only used one die - that leaves some trace of the original cent on the other side. The more expensive machines, like the one that made this piece, used two different dies to roll an impression on both sides of the cent. All of the modern-day rolling machines I have seen at tourist attractions were made like a vending machine - put in a quarter and maybe your own cent, and the thing runs the cent between two rollers. The die to make the impression is curved and fitted onto the surface of one roller. The two rollers are spaced a bit closer together than a cent is thick, like the old washing machine wringers. The elongated penny drops out the bottom and the machine shuts itself off after the process completes. John in ID

But regardless the penny comes out thinner than when it went in, right? This piece is still as thick as a normal penny if and a lot more solid. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Well, after looking again at the photos, it could well have been struck and not an elongated penny. Elongateds usually are curved a bit as they come off the rollers. And they would be a bit thinner than a cent. I am sure there is an article or book on the medals and commemorative stuff issued at the Jamestown Exposition, but I don't have anything at hand. In the 2002 membership directory of a token group I belong to are a few collectors of Jamestown Expo stuff. One has an e-mail address, so I will see if it is still good and ask him about the piece. When a big event like the Jamestown Exposition is staged, a lot of entrepreneurs make good money selling souvenirs of all sorts. John in ID
