Me, too, Pris. I've wanted one for many, many years, but couldn't justify it in the eyes of my wife......."What's that good for?". Then this Summer she saw our grandson playing with his toy detector and finding his treasures (nails, pull tabs, etc) in the campground, she remarked "it would be neat to have one of those". Well......you don't have to repeat that too many times before I see an open door. I'm not sorry I bought the Famous Trails, even though there likely are better choices, it does find things. It got me to looking and finding this site and meeting the great folks here. Thanks to a very generous benefactor that visits this site, I now have another detector to make comparisons......I haven't had much opportunity to compare them yet, but did notice they are very different in operation. One has to move to detect and the tones change according to the type of metal. The other can be held stationary over a target and the tones change as it gets closer to the target (at least in VLF mode, not sure about the two discriminatory modes).

So far my searching has been on my own property...I live on 1.68 acres just 2.4 miles from the Hudson Bay Company's "Old Trapper's Trail" that became a branch of the "Applegate (wagon) Trail" and a half mile from an extinct indian village. The thought occurs to me that I might find some nice artifacts here. So far nothing but rusty cast iron/steel from times gone by (except one 1953 penny), but nothing I can hang my hat on....but then, I've only covered a very small area.

I tried to go to John's Detectors website twice this morning, but, for reason's I can't figure out, my browser hangs and I get an error "not responding". I get the home page, but nothing else. I thought I'd look over his products. Since I'm new to this hobby, maybe folks here can make some recomendations??? I think I'll be looking to upgrade to a better detector. Here, our soil is iron rich and the Pacific Ocean beaches are only an hours drive. I imagine a manual ground balance detector would be best? Suggestions in that price range....although I could add a little without breaking our budget. Crack it, maybe.

Hey Jack congrats!! One thing you could do is shoot John a pm, or just call him? I do this all the time. He is a great guy and will help you find the detector that suits your needs.

Good luck, and enjoy the hunt, Beale.
