Talking Stars n' Stuff

Hey Bill

I'm also a member of that Astronomy Club Boobie refered to:
Amateur Astronomers of Beaver County - Western Pennsylvania

A good group of guys, and our webmaster is here also. I use a 7" Meade LX50 Maksutov, modified with a crayford focuser to accept a few 2" eyepieces from Televue. An awesome combination for planets and brighter objects. Detecting by day and stargazing at night. Come down to our May, June, July, August, or September meeting . Everybody is welcome. It's open to the public. Even if you don't have a telescope. Use mine.

Thanks
Leo

Bill, There seems to be quite a few people I have come across here on Treasure Quest that has an interest in astronomy. I personally chose metal detecting as a hobby since my work schedule does not permit me to enjoy my night hobby anymore. Metal detecting can be expensive when one invests in high-end machines, however it is (for me) nothing in relation to the expense of astronomy. So far I own two Schmidt-Cassegrains, three Reflectors, one Refractor - as well as astronomical binoculars and all sorts of accessories, including that for astrophotography.

Leo,

I'll keep your club's star parties in mind. I appreciate the invite. I'm always looking to meet people interested in detecting & astronomy. I have your club's website bookmarked. I'm a member of the Starlight Astronomy Club in Hollidaysburg... just south of Altoona. We do our skywatches at Canoe Creek State Park. It's also open to the public. Our website is at Starlight Astronomy Club

I know what you mean about work schedule. I work for UPS and average 12 hours from the time I leave home till I return home again. So, most of the time I don't do much during the week in the way of imaging. So, that leaves me the weekends which don't cooperate most of the time. I trimmed down my scope collection last year. Just for the simple reason I didn't use them all. I have a Meade LX200 10" f/6.3 and a Stellarvue SV66 ED. I use both for imaging. I just bought the SV66 and have only had a chance to get it out once. The observatory makes it nice to allow of minimal of time for setup. Metal detectors don't cost much compared to good scopes and imagers. My imager and AO7 cost about $5500. The scope was around $3500 when I bought it... and that the 'low' end of the price scale to do deep sky imaging with good results. You could easily spend $75000 or more on the top end equipment. I love both hobbies. There have been times I have detected two or three days in a row and stayed up till 4-5 am and then got up by 7 and went detecting. By the end of the third day I can't think straight...
