Default Hello from south Georgia

Hi Everyone,

I am new to MD'ing as well as this website. I bought my Excalibur 1000 about a month ago and tested it while visiting family in Connecticut and Cape Cod. I am a PADI AOW cert diver and plan to take "the beast" with me to the Keys next week for mini lobster season. Hopefully I'll be able to come home and share at least one find with everyone.

When I get back, I hope to hit the beaches of northern Florida as often as I can. Does anyone know of clubs in the area of south Georgia and northern/central Florida? Oh and if anyone knows of where I should not go MD'ing, that would be very helpful too.

It's great meeting everyone, there is a wealth of knowledge here.

SalinFL

SalinFl, Where about are you in Ga? I'm new to the site also and am getting ready to move to Valdosta. I am trying to figure out what sort of metal detecting action there is in the area.

Hey Kevin,

I am right next to Moody AFB. If you enjoy land detecting, there is plenty of acreage here. Lots of farms and undeveloped land. The people here are very nice and although I have not actively searched the area (I'm more of a water bug), I'm sure if you approach a land/farm owner you'll be well received. There are a couple of places I'd like to investigate in Tifton and Valdosta - a few of them have a rather eerie past and have been written up in the town's magazine as being haunted

What is bringing you down to south GA?

Hope your move goes smoothly,
SalinFL

SalinFl, I am headed to Moody AFB...go figure. Not sure many folk would move from the UK to Valdosta to metal detect, but here I am. I've SCUBA dived in the past, but not sure I can afford to dive and detect at the same time I need to learn more about the area and do some research. Here, we can go out in the middle of a farm field knowing nothing about it, and come back with a few Roman coins. I don't that that'd be to fruitful in the colonies, so I probably need to get there an hit the library, college, and courthouse.

Hey Kevin,

Well let me extend to you an early welcome. Please feel free to ask questions about the area before and after you get here. I'll do my best to help or at least point you in the right direction. I live on base, will you be renting or are you planning to live on base also? Let me know if you have children, I have two daughters, 14 & 11, so if you need help with schools or activities I can help there too.

It sounds like the metal detecting where you are is a bit more exciting than here... I'd love to get my hands on a Roman coin being that is my heritage. Of course if you are into military history then you will be quite content here. I just purchased my metal detector about 2 months ago, so I'm not only still figuring it out, I myself still need to hit the library, courthouse, etc., for Georgia and Florida. If I make any headway on that before you get here, I'll fill you in on what I've found out. I have only taken my detector scuba diving once so far. I've found that detecting is one of those hobbies that you either need to share with someone else who is also interested or do it alone. Dragging people along with you that just don't find the same thrill tend to make your time less enjoyable as well. I'd like to hit some beaches soon, not necessarily to scuba but just walk the beaches and maybe snorkel.

Let me know what month you'll be arriving. What unit are you coming into and did they issue you a sponsor?
