I'm slowly becoming a little more comfortable detecting. I do feel people look at me like that once in a while. It depends on how I feel any given day. Sometimes I'm real self-conscious, sometimes I don't give a crap.

Hell, I even bought a White's ballcap, pouch and of course their detector, so one day I'll go out in full force with my White 'uniform' on.

You know guys, I am glad to hear you say that you feel self conscious. My daughter thinks her Mother is the strangest thing on the planet. I am very shy and feel that everyone is watching me. There are some days I go detecting and end up just driving around because there are people in the park where I want to detect. (Can you imagine people in a park??? ) I like MDing because it allows me to put on the headphones and go off on my own. I guess we all have our insecurities to get over. Just glad to hear there are others out there and not just me.

OMG, JoAnne...I do the same thing, I'll set off to go detecting at a park and if there's alot of people there, I just drive on!!!! I do like the headphones for one reason I pretend I can't hear people with them on, in the hopes that they won't bother me......even though I look like a total DORK when I wear them!

JoAnne, Indy & Don - Count me in into the "metal detecting insecurity club" as well. I like to go MDing with someone else with me, even if they do not have a metal detector. Once I am MDing in a park, or where-ever, I do not feel as insecure as I am before I even get there. In fact, I have been approached quite a number of times by people interested in metal detecting, whether they had one stored up at home and didn't think metal detectors even work, or if they were just curious if I was finding anything at all. One time a guy stopped to talk about the value of some old silver coins he had at home. I always try to encourage them to get out in the park, or where-ever, to start searching with their own metal detectors... most probably so I will not be the only one MDing and seem like that total dork!!!

Thanks everyone - I guess I am not alone in my feelings. Glad to know there are others out there like me. HH

Here's my solution...

I find sites out in the country. Believe me..if your out swinging in the middle of a field or even close to the road knowone even notices you. Seriously.....if they do they drive by so quick they don't even know what you are doing.

I do alot of hunting at night also...nobody bothers me and I can really concentrate on what I'm doing.

Believe me...people don't notice you as much as you think they do.

Yeah, I did some of the night hunting. The DFX model has a backlight to it, so it makes it a little easier. I live in a populated area, so its tough to find a place thats 'human free' .

I realize that people don't notice me as much as I think they notice me. I just have to convince myself of that. I think the answer to that is, the more I do it, the more I get comfortable with it.
