Default 5 X 10" DD coil

Hey Beale,

Did you sell you 5 X 10" yet? If you didn't, you might want to reconsider it.
I'm over in Raleigh, so our soil conditions are probably similar.

I decided to start using that coil and I love it. I use it most of the time now. It's much quieter and pinpointing it is a breeze. Just do the "X" over the target, then I point the toe of the coil at the target. It beeps and tells me exactly where the target is. It's a lot more stable than the stock 9" coil.

Anyway, thought I'd just drop you a note and suggest that you take it out and give it another try.

Hey Bob yea I sold it. I am gonna get a DD coil soon. Probably the 6" 18.75 one. The 5x10 just was not me. The trade of it actually got me my new digger, which I really like, Beale.

My 6" DD 18.75 kHz coil came today. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to try it out tomorrow.

So far, I like the DD coils.

Do you ever work your way back towards Raleigh? Got any places in the Hillsborough area that you want to share and meet at?

Been thinking about that one. Let us know how it works out. esp. the pinpointing.

I took it for a dry run in the house today. Pinpointing that one is as easy as pinpointing the 5 X 10 coil.

It's really simple if you use this method:

Swing it one why then 90 degrees... you know.... make an "X" over your target.

That pretty much is it for the pinpointing, but what I like to do to confirm it is to tilt the toe of the coil straight down over the spot that I just X'd.

You should hear a very short, distinct "beep". That's it.

Once you get the hang of it, you won't even try to pinpoint using the Pinpoint Button.

I've only spent 2 or 3 hours with the 5x10. I can't pinpoint with it for anything but man its hot on nickels, ptabs & gold:)

I don't know what you're doing, but I don't bother putting it into pinpoint mode. Just do the "X" thing. More specifically, it's more like a +. And it's right there. You really don't need to turn the coil over and point the toe at the spot.

To me it's a lot faster than using a CC coil and the Pinpoint button.

I'm no expert with this stuff, I just know what seems to work for me.

If you think of how the DD coil is configured, it's like passing a knife blade over the target from left to right. When you hear the beep, you know that the blade is over the target, but you don't know where, along the blade, the target really is. So you turn 90 degrees, keeping an eye on the spot where you heard the beep, and pass the blade over it again. This time when you hear the beep, the target should be directly under the middle of the blade.

When I discovered this, it was like a light went on. You'll get it.

Oh crap.... I just remembered. I left something out.

When you turn 90 degrees and sweep again, as you're sweeping left to right, move the coil towards you until the sound disappears. Continue sweeping left to right as you move the coil away from you until the tone disappears again. Split the difference and you've got it. Then I tip the coil and point the toe down to the spot. It should beep when the target is just off the toe.

I probably didn't do a great job of explaining it and it's not as complicated as I'm probably making it sound.

BUT....

The most simple way to pinpoint a DD coil (in my opinion) is to sweep left and right, making very short, slow sweeps, once you have a target. While you're sweeping left and right in a very tight pattern, pull the coil toward yourself. Eventually, you'll pull the coil away from the object. When the beep stops, if you've done it correctly, your object will be just in front of your coil.
