PCGS blew the call on this 1803 Draped bust half

This coin is a counterfeit......and if PCGS has certified it as authentic, then somebody doesn't know what they think they do. There's the possibility that the holder has been tampered with.....but this coin was stamped on a collared die.....which was not in use in 1803.

Notice the difference in the stars on the obverse as well. The ones on the fake are significantly "meatier" than the ones on the original.

Be careful when buying early US silver. Learn what to look for so you don't get stung. This outfit wants 500 dollars for a fake bust half....ouch.....that'd have to hurt.

very interesting ! Buying old coins is alot like buying indian artifacts If you dug it it's a pretty sure bet its real.Anything else can be a gamble.I've always hoped to dig myself a draped bust and wouldent want it any other way ! (well mabey )

Great post Wyatt. That is some really good information. I was thinking about turning some of my clad into silver or maybe even gold. Ebay seems to be a good place to do this but now I am not so sure. Guess I better do some homework before buying. Thanks a bunch.
