Default Stunning 1917-D type 1 standing liberty quarter

I wasn't able to get out today because we had company. If I'd been out sniffing for silver roosevelts...I'd have missed this opportunity.

I bought a 20th century type set on eBay....that had belonged to an old dealer. All of the coins are much better than average....and the standing liberty quarter is a PREMIUM quality specimen....full head AND full rivets in the shield. Take a look at the pictures. The brighter one is the one I bought in this set. The duller one is one that is in a PCGS slab..graded MS-64. If that's a 64......mine's a 67. I am not a fan of slabbed coins, but this one will be submitted.

The Morgan is one of the other coins in the set....it's a 1900-O but the picture of the reverse is a bit blurry. I will be submitting it for grading as well.

All of the coins are real prizes....and I bought the set for under 275 dollars ppd. I feel like I just robbed a bank.

Finding them in the dirt is fun....but this is an exciting buy.

Soooo.....why so excited?....PCGS population report of 1917-D type 1 SLQs in MS-67....is but 12 coins. This could very well be (and probably is) No 13...which gets it a 4 figure price tag.

The deed is done....and now all I have to do is wait for them to get here. I sent certified funds via express mail this morning. Now to pace the floor for 4 or 5 days like an expectant father....

Here's the whole set. Bad picture...but they graded nothing over EF-40 in this set. I'd like to know what book thay're using....so I never refer to it unless i'm buying.

VERY nice Wyatt,

I must say, you have a way of finding those good coins...one way or another. Congradulations!

I have to wonder....why did a coin dealer (of many years) with the apparent intent to assemble a superb type set... choose a 1937 buffalo to keep for his personal collection?.....Could that be a 37-D 3 legger in high grade?...I have my fingers crossed.

I can't wait until next wednesday....the suspense will probably kill me before then. Greg told me I was probably going to have to be sedated until they get here.

The type set arrived this morning......and it's nice, but the standing liberty has been lightly cleaned and has some hairlines, and all of the barber coins are cleaned.....bummer.

I think the set' worth what I paid for it, but was hoping the quarter was the "big score". It almost was.

The Buffalo is a 37-D....but a 4 legged one.

The 55 Franklin half has not been cleaned, is UNC and has full bell lines, the 1901 Indian is UNC with about 50% luster still red. The 1883 V nickel, is UNC...though weakly struck, and is of the "no cents" variety. The UNC Jefferson is a 50-D, the key to that series, so it's not all bad news.

The Morgan is impressive, but probably an impressive AU-58, and no RPM. Nothing worth slabbing in the set, so into the vault she goes "as-is". I may actually get an airtite for the Indian and put my 63 fatty in the set. I may also swap out the 43 steel cent for my 1909 VDB which is AU.
