I agree that TQ is the next best thing to awesome neighbors, but in defense of my youngness, I have to tell you that my best friend of the last 6 years started out as a neighbor. Now we live in different cities, hundreds of miles apart, but we're just as close as if we could sit on our porches and share a gin and tonic...

A good neighbor is hard to come by, and should NEVER be taken for granted.

I grew up in a town in Ind with about 500 people, everyone knew everyone else & if we did something we weren't supposed to do, my mom knew about it before we got home, gotta love the small towns

I wasn't "knocking" young folks. By some standards I am young myself. I'm just telling how it is from my point of view. We don't really socialize with our neighbors, and this once "tight-knit" community is not like that any more, and I kinda miss it. But my point was that it is nice to be able to come home from work and enjoy the "company" of all the friendly TQ members. In other words---y'all are my neighbors(by choice). And I'm sure that there are still many communities where everbody still gets together and has a good time. And we do have some friends around here, but it ain't like it used to be....

I think that a large part of the reason that people aren't as close to one another as they used to be is that we're such a mobile society...when I was a kid, most of the people around us (my family included) had lived there forever, knew everyone since birth and planned to someday be buried in that same small town. Today, everyone around us migrated from somewhere else...we don't know our neighbors and don't take time (for the most part) to GET to know them...and in the rare case we make friends, it usually ends with one family or the other moving on to another state...

Peg and I try to keep the "old ways" alive as best we can...whenever anyone new moves into our building, Peg always sends over a home-made pie or cookies...we try to always speak and say more than "hello" to our neighbors...but as all the posts have said - it's not how it used to be - and that's a shame.

Friends are where you find them and TQ allows us to make friends all over the world. This shouldn't be considered such a big thing as it's really a pretty small planet, in an average solar system on the spiral arm of a typical galaxy. No big deal to me if my friends live in another country or on another continent for that matter. It's the warmth of the friendship that counts.

Cheers,

BDA

Well said DF. And TQ is like having neighbors and friends close by.

We are very lucky where we live. We live very rural with only 8 houses on a 3 mile long road. DH and I know everyone and between us we went to school with most of them. Everyone does look out for everyone else. If there's a storm, everyone is making sure everyone else is ok, if you see smoke you call and make sure it's not the house, just anything. It's a great place to live and I feel very fortunate.

I very much agree with this post. I know that Noelle and I try to make our little apartment community as much a home as we can. We have great neighbors and several of them we know we can depend on. We usually have a gathering out by the parking lot each night with all the kids and parents and lots of times it turns into an impromtu pot luck.

Many aren't as fortunate and we have lived in a couple of places where your neighbor won't even look at you (you may not want them to ). I think it's a pity, and it sure makes a difference when the effort is made.

If we all made the effort maybe things could start to change back to how it should be.

Great post!!!
