Well,... first off... welcome to TQ! Glad to hear that you're getting back into the hobby, but being torn between a Quattro or a DFX is not an easy spot to be in! The Quattro has a lot to offer, but if your heart is set on a White's, I don't think you can get a better-reviewed and revered detector than the DFX. Let us know how it turns out, and good luck!

I own a white's xlt, and the dfx is slightly similar. i've used white's machines in the past and have always been impressed with the detector and great service. i've never used the minelab but you can't go wrong with the white's!!

Welcome to the site dishtech. Glad to have you drop in. I run a Minelab X-Terra 70 and really enjoy it. I have not used a whites so can not comment. I will say that the Quattro has not been one of Minelabs better received machines. IMO if I was looking high end Minelab it would be the Explorer 2. The DFX is from all I read an awesome machine.

If you can get a chance to swing both do so. I would also give our sponsors a buzz and talk to them. Good luck with your choice, Beale.

I used the Whites Eagle Spectrum for 13 years before I bought a Whites XLT. The XLT was a great detector, but I didn't see any advantage over the Eagle Spectrum. A year later I bought a DFX and it has been the best detector yet. I also bought a Minelab SE about a month ago and still like my DFX better.

The Minelab SE, out of the box, is a deeper detector than the DFX, but thats because the DFX's default programs are very conservative, for stabilities sake, and the SE comes with a DD wide scan coil. The wide scan coil gives better performance in mineralized soil, and has a wider pattern giving better ground coverage which increases your odds of passing over a target. Also, the DD coils allow you to find good target next to trash a bit easier. All these advantages give the edge to the SE in finding more deeper targets, but put a DD coil on the DFX and it's the DFX which has the advantage.

The DFX is lighter, easier to operate and understand, has far better target ID resolution making identifying targets easier, and the DFX seems to do better at finding gold jewelry.

In short. Out of the box the Minelab SE will go deeper. Put a DD coil on the DFX and the DFX is by far the better detector in my opinion.

Hi and welcome. The Quattro is a bit quirky and not for everyone. The DFX is much easier to use but there are other choices as well. Give me a call and I'm sure I can hook you up with a good deal with QUALITY freebies and free shipping. No hidden costs.
