Default What coils?

I know this has been discussed at length but can't seem to access the search function to find the info. If someone could point me to a post I would apprecitate it. Looking for another coil to augment my stock coil on the M6.
Had remembered that the 6X10 was rated good for soil and at the beach but could not find the posts. Also, the literature with my machine said that the M6 now has an undated coil but it looks as it always has. It is the same as I thought?
Any help would be appreciated. I am just starting out but don't want to miss out on the $49.95 coils from Whites offer with a new machine.

Default Hey Chuck...

...the Eclipse, DD 4"x6" and the 6"x10" are the two coils I would buy for that M6 if I were you. They are both excellent coils, and will come in handy! I would stay away from the 8"x14" coil, as it is very large, and very heavy, making the balance of the machine harder on your arm and wrist, and seldom is there a need for that kind of depth.

I use the 6"x10" at least 90% of the time when relic huntingwith my MXT, and it does a very good job!

Default Chuck thanks for the input

I will get the 6X10 and start there. What differences will I notice over the stock 9.5 that comes with the machine? I know the pin pointing is done at the front and rear but what other differences are there in the two?

Again, thanks for all your help on the Ratphones. I would and have recommended the treasurehut to anyone who has a question about anything you sell. You are a pleasure to do business with and a wealth of information.

well i have the bluemax 4x6 coil for the xlt, and i guess its similar to the 6x10. there is a considerable difference if you went back to a hard hunted spot because usually i can pick up 2 or 3 things i missed with the larger coil. Pinpointing is a lot easier and its good if you're ever in the woods or thick grass. Although it takes a lot longer to search because less ground is being covered, its great for trashy grounds and places you think are hunted out.

Default Well Chuck...

...mainly you will notice more stability in mineralized ground because it is a DD rather than a concentric coil. As grasshopper has mentioned, it will also be much better in trashy areas, as the signal is concentrated in the center of the coil (blade) from front to back, and as you said will pinpoint much easier as long as you understand that once you center on the "blade middle", and pull back slowly until the signal drops, that it will be right off the front tip of the coil.

It will also give you more depth than the stock coil will. The 4"x6" coil will be even better in trashy areas, allowing you to pick your way through the trash better, albeit with less depth.

Hope this helps my friend!

Default confused.......

Ok, I'm new here and a bit confused about the coils. Can anyone give some guidance on the following and why one is better than the other?

DD 4x6

DD 6x6

DD 6x10

DD 1400 Deep scan.

Would really appreciate your input.

Default Robert's Coil question

Robert,
Surprised someone has not answered this question yet. I would pm Chuck at the treasure hut and ask him. He is well versed in the coils and can explain them. I am just getting started but he has been a great help.
Many on this site can help but Chuck seems to spend a good amount of time here.

Hi Robert,

As Chuck mentioned the DD coils perform better in mineralized soils. The smaller coils will separate targets better than larger coils.

Larger coils are best when accepted or rejected targets are relatively few and far between and target depth is the biggest concern.

Smaller coils are best when accepted or rejected targets are highly concentrated and target separation is the major concern.

The 4x6DD coil is great for target separation at trashy ,hotrock and iron infested sites etc. and less prone to target masking.Depth is realtive to conditions but expect 6" max as a rule.

The 6x10DD is just a larger version of the 4x6DD and expands the soil coverage with a possible increase in depth and may suffer a bit more from target masking at trashy sites. Great general purpose coil.

Never used the 1400 deep scan but would only recommend for beach or relic use and not practical at most inland sites.

The 6x6 i'm not sure whether it's the 5.3 Eclipse Concentric or the EXcelerator 6" DD your asking about but. I have the 5.3 Eclipse concentric and 5"EXcelerator DD and both are super coils at trashy sites and the 5.3 Eclipse provides outstanding depth perhaps equal to the 6"x10" DD but lacks the overall coverage.

The 5" EXcelerator is one of the best coils for target separation i've used so far on the M6 and hit solid target responses at trashy sites about 5" deep. HH Bill

Robert, I use all the coils but one that you listed, heres a quick over view of them.

The stock 950 coil is good for open ground with minimal trash, good ground coverage, best depth. Will mask more targets in heavy trash.

The 6X10DD Eclipse coil is great in minralized ground more stable in general over the stock 950 coil, better in iron trash with decent depth. Works way better in trash than the stock 950 coil while maintaining good ground coverage, more ground coverage than the smaller 5.3 Eclipse coil. The 6x10DD is a good coil for prospecting as well. This is the coil I use 90% of the time on my MXT.

The 5.3 Eclipse is great in trash best depth of all the smaller coils, it pinpoints very well and is killer on coins.

The 4x6DD shoooter Eclipse coil is great in trash and confined areas, good in minralization, great for prospecting and nugget hunting like the 6x10DD. Has the least amount of depth out of the small coils.

I have never used the 1400 deep scan coil, but I hear its a heavy coil, its suppose to do better in minralized ground with lots of ground coverage.

My personal opinion is get the 6x10DD and the 5.3 Eclipse coils they are great accessory coils. Most of the time the 5.3 Eclipse coil will cover most of your small coil needs, then later down the road pick up the 4x6DD shooter coil if needed.

I have all three coils listed and they all have there place and do what there designed to do.

Take Care & HH
