Default White's Spectrum problem

Hey folks, I went to use my spectrum today and when you turn it on it goes crazy as if you're scanning all kinds of objects. Tried reseting it by removing the battery while it was on but no luck....... Any ideas?
Thanks

Do you have another coil to attach? You may have a short in your coil wire. No high power lines around? Also, check for a hole in your coil where water or moisture can get in.

And you could try changing the batteries. It's a long shot but who knows? I was very pleased with their repair folks when I had to send mine in if it comes to that. JC

My first detector was a Spectrum and I had the same problem, it was the coil, just failed, something internal, nothing visible.

If it's not the batteries, and you have another coil, LaRoper's idea is the way to go.

If you don't have another coil to try and you have a coil cover on, be sure to take it off and make sure the inside of it and the coil are clean. You can also try "jiggling" the cable at the stress relief at the coil, while the detector is on and see if it has any effect and be sure the cable is secure on the control box. Also visually inspect the coil and cable for any obvious problems.

Good Luck!

I agree with LaRoper and MinelabMan as a possible coil problem and if not the coil, check to make sure the control box is firmly secured to the shaft. I had 6000 DI Pro SL and the rivet securing the control to the shaft was worn and caused a short or grounding problem and everytime i tapped the control box it would false beep. I've had 2 bad Whites coils a 5.3 and Precision Scan 800 and both were internal not cable related but once you solve the problem you should be very happy with the detector.Good Luck HH Bill

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses. I tried several different coils with no improvement. I took to a local dealer and he did the same, with the same results. We both decided it was time to send back to the factory. He shipped it to Whites on Monday, I got a call from the repair center on Thursday with a $68 repair cost and told it should ship out on Friday. I've had this detector since the early 90's and this is the first penny I've had to spend in repairs so I'm very happy with it.
