Default White's 49er Null Point?

I am new to the hobby and am buying a new detector, as soon I make up my mind. It looks like there are so many good ones out there in the $200-$300.
While I am doing that I want to learn how to use my Dad's old White 4900/D. In the manual it describes locating the null point? To properly locate the null point on the GEB dial, it is necessary to have a known mineral sample. It says one has been included with the "49er" for this use.
What is the sample and can I use something else?
Thanks

Thanks for the welcome.
I thought I needed to know exactly where the null point was on the ground exclusion balance dial. The manual says each one of the detectors are a little different so you need to find the exact null point with the mineral sample. The location of this null point is for the detector's response to Hot Rocks and for prospecting. I don't know what half this stuff means, I am copying out the manual. I'm not going to worry about it right now. it is way beyond my skill level. I don't even know what hot rocks are.

Default hot rocks

I'm a total newb to this but my understanding is that hot rocks are ones having a high iron or other metal content or slightly magnetic.
does your machine have arrows with a "p"? If so those are the presets,I usually use mine (6000 di ser 3)with all the settings on the pre sets. It's found us lotsa stuff so far.Although it's heavy and awkward compared to more modern machines,I really like it,it ID's stuff pretty good.

Hank,
My 4900 does have the P on the dials. I'm glad you told me what they were for. There was no info in the manual about it. I 'm gonna blow the dust off this thing and go out in the back yard to see what it will do. Thanks for the info.
