Default Ask Jimmy SIerra:DFX programs

Name: Bill
I own this model: DFX
I need help with a good seting for the DFX on the central coast for beach & inland.

Hi Bill,
Actually the preset programs are pretty good for the DFX for most conditions. They can however be cranked up a bit for some more depth as long as 1/ the ground will allow increase in gain and 2/ there is not much bother for radio or 60 cycle interference. I would use the beach mode for beaches of course and then try to increase the AC sens. to about 70 or 72 . If all is calm on the meter and not any chatter then stick with that. Then try to raise the preamp gain from 2 to 3. That will double your voltage gain and should help with additional depth as well. Main thing is not to raise either AC or Preamp higher than the detector will take and remain without falsing or erratic behavior in the audio or on the meter. The same corrections hold true for a inland program. Either coin and jewellry or relic program will work fine. I use relic program, which reads bullets etc, but I don t really care what the icons are. I watch the blocking and the numbers only and dig everything except what I think is iron. Stay away from just the coin program as you lose too many good targets especially gold wedding bands. Whichever you use of the 2, I prefer to accept (-) or negative numbers from -25 to 0 and all positive (+) numbers from 0 to +94. then reject +95. The only other hint I could make to you is that when you are working away from the beach (salt water/black sand) and inland you can add some extra depth to the DFX by working at the single frequency of 15Khz rather than dual freq. Using the same settings above, you will increase depth particularly on gold items. The down side to the way I hunt is that you will not be rejecting foil and pull tabs and that can be a problem. If you rejecct pull tabs you will lose a lot of gold rings. If you reject the foil you are only gong to lose vry small gold chains etc. So you will have to decide which of the low + numbers 1 thru 8 you will accept or reject. As I said I dig it all to get the most items. In a dirty park I might change my mind. But one thing is for sure,, regardless of how many numbers I accept or reject, I use 15 khz all the time except at the salt water beaches. Mainly because of the extra depth particularly on gold.

You might want to check out the book DIgging Deeper with the DFX by Jeff Foster to help with some special programs. It is very advanced stuff, but well worth looking into . Best regards and good luck Jimmy
