Hi Bill,
As you say the XLT is a Silver and coin magnet and good on Relics also but the 6.59khz frequency isn't the best for smaller jewelry and forget small chains and micro jewelry . Would suggest using a lower disc setting to perhaps -20 or -30 and dig the responses 00 and above till you can't stand it anymore take a few stiff drinks and continue to dig some more low VDI's up through pulltabs and a few high coin #'s to keep you sane If you hunting inland in trash or any other type environmental impediment it's just dig and hope scenario in my opinion. It's hard . HH Bill |

ive found you have to remember the farther down the rings are the lower the VDI is. Air testing after i removed a ring gave me a higher VDI. That said, yes you do get a good solid graph...most of my VDIs have been around 9. Obviously it depends on your soil. who ever told you to lower your VDI is correct. I have mine set to -40 i dont mind the noise and can over look the - numbers just to gain the depth which you get when you reduce you disc.

Thanks everyone for the info. Bill I like the idea of having a drink and then going again! LOL I will try lowering my Disc even further and see how it works for a while. I hunt inland exclusively so trashed areas at schools and parks maybe a problem. Like you said I will ignore the negative numbers and dig solid hits that are around the 9 to 10 range and see what I come up with. I will do some air testing this weekend to see what my readings are on different size gold rings. I let you all know how I make out. The weather is supposed to be nice and warm hear for the rest of the week so I hope to get out this weekend to a park near me that I have not been in before. I have never seen anyone MD there so maybe I will have good hits. Thanks again, Bill

You could "teach" the detector to find them better just by going into learn to accept and waving a bunch of different rings in front of the coil. This can help to optimize some settings.

you just have to remember when you LEARN a target you arent just learning say VDI 9, it might be 7,8,9,10, and 11. Same goes for disc out a number. Rings are tricky because they are mixed with different metals and very in size. What does help is to eliminate certain numbers you are getting continuiously, like those pull tabs common to the site... normally its just one number.
