Default 5.3 Bullseye coil question.

Hi everyone, Is anyone using a 5.3 Bullseye with an XLT? I bought a used coil on ebay however the person said they only used it once and it appears thay may be so. It is in perfect condition. However today I tried for the first time in my back yard and I am having balancing problems. With any of the programs both preset or custom, it air and ground balances good but as soon as the tone comes on after ground balancing it is doing alot of false signaling. Can you set the gain and AC Sens as high with one of these coils or do I have to keep those levels lower? When I pull the trigger to go to all metal mode I can hear it pulsing in the background. Is any of this normal and has anyone else had these problems or do you feel I may have a bad coil? Is there any way to check them other than sending it back to the factory? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Bill

Hi Boobie, Are you able to raise your Gain and AC Sens as high as you can with other coils. I worked with it some more this afternoon and noticed if I keep these a couple of points lower than I run my other coils then it seems to be much more stable. I have to keep my AC Sens around 66 or 67 and the gain about 3. Then it seems better. Is anyone running it much hotter and still keeping it stable? Bill

I have the DFX and love the 5.3. You should be able to get higher numbers on preamp and AC because the EMI and mineral effects are smaller than on a larger coil.

I bought a 5.3 black max and an 800 blue max and had issues with both
coils. The 5.3 coil has shifting innards and every so often it would act up on the XLT by either not balancing or acting as if the AC sens was too high,i use on an IDX pro and it seems to work fine as i go slow with it. The 800 blue max had trouble similar troubles but doesn,t appear to have the shifting inside. When i 5.3 give the coil a slight shake i can feel the loose parts shifting .
Not saying that is your problem if you have any at all but i have no instability issues with a new 5.3 Black Max or a new 800 and as dewcon mentioned you should be able to run the 5.3 a little higher than the 950 and also go slower with it. I only buy used coils from dealers or known sellers on all the forum classifieds now. HH Bill

boobie, if a hold the coil and shake it lightly side to side i can hear and feel the inner windings or something shifting side to side whereas the new 5.3 coil is stable with no noticable movement inside . I wonder if the coil hit something or was dropped causing whatever was holding everything in place to fail and that's why the seller had it on ebay. HH Bill

Did the ooooo shake the coils this morning and i dont get any raddle. sounds like shake-raddle-and-junk to me. Especially since we take care to even secure our leads from the coils so they dont move.

I wasn't suggesting shaking a perfectly good coil and perhaps i should have used the term tilting side to side as the coil had obvious operational problems and just didn't feel right while swinging it on the XLT and was only relating my experience with a coil PABill was asking about.

I have a 5.3 BlackMax and love it! I run my AC around 73 and my preamp around 4 or 5. It doesn't pick up pennies that well but it knocks my headphones off on quarters. My depth is (as far as I can tell) about the same as my my stock coil. The 5.3 is sooooo much quieter than my stock loop and easier for me to swing back and forth.

I still hate winter in Michigan......

According to Whites the 5.3 should read everything the same as the stock coil except the depth reading is going to be about 2'' off.
