Question on White's XLT

Indian heads come up bottle cap and pennie at the same time and usually it is . But the sound plus the numbers and graph is what i go by. But mainly the sound the numbers and graph are just extras for me. But ya allways dig a little junk. lol

Hi Bill, I used the stock coil and tried all of the programs and a couple of my own. I tweeked up the AC, pre-amp and did the proper ground balace after all of the adjustments. I also made sure that the area was clear of iron as far down that my detector could reach in about a 4' radius. The dirt was normal consistancy.

Your 6" test, did that include the grass or was that a to the top of the soil measurement. Mine didn't include the grass height so maybe I should have stated that also in my reply. So I guess it would be a 8-8.5" test. Still....I should have picked something up.

I rarely use the 950 coil and is mainly used for a quick scan of a new site and low trash areas. The XLT doesn't fair very well on freshly planted deeper targets in my opinion but i have no problem hitting coin targets at about 6" in the field with the 5.3 coil. My planted zinc penny will always produce an audio response while using the 4.75" 350 snooper coil on the XLT and produce an occasional accurate ID in factory preset Relic program about an inch above ground level and a little better with the 5.3 coil. I haven't tested the 950 coil on the penny yet. I actually prefer the 800 coil vs the 950. Target ID at depth can be difficult but you still should get an audio response.

Recovered 8"to 9" pennies and dimes, buckels and other relics using the 950 coil mainly because i knew the site produced them and dug any faint modulated audio response or threshold null regardless of target id.

I use a number of detectors to hunt my sites and the XLT is always first to scan but does seem to miss a lot of targets due to masking from the filtering effect and swing speed requirements especially with the larger coil. Would highly suggest the 5.3 BM coil on the XLT for general coin hunting at most sites using the Relic program and learning tone id.

Sorry for the ramble but i really like the XLT and aware of it's shortcomings but a 7" coin target should produce at least an audio response in Relic mode. HH Bill

If You get a nickel it will show "nickel-ring". If you find a zinc penny it will show "penny- pulltab". If you get a copper penny it will show "penny-dime". And any Silver coin will be alot higher than a clad coin. The VDI numbers will close to 85 or higher if I remember right.
If your settings are right you should be getting nickels, unless you bought it used and someone changed the settings on it. Hope that helps.
