I have a question for anyone familiar with White's XLT. I bought it about 6 weeks ago, and am slowly getting used to it. My question is this. I have found 3 Mercury dimes, and 1 Silver quarter, but in the array of 400+ coins I have dug, I forgot to note where the numbers were when I landed the silver. Is there a reading that indicates silver? For example, all my pennies and dimes are in the +70 to +80 range. I know sometimes zinc pennies ring up at +60s same as bottle tops. I also notice I don't dig many nickels, and I'm sure I am bypassing them. I have 14 nickels out of 400+ coins. I did notice that the likely display when I find a nickel is +27 with 1 long bar that goes to the top, not always true but seems to be a good standard. Is there a particular reading for silver dimes? silver quarters? Halfs? dollars? Also, I have yet to find gold anything, is there a specific reading for gold?...or a range of readings? Also, buffalo nickels? and some older coins like indain pennies, that are different in metal composition. Would love to see a dialogue on this subject. I fear I am missing lots! My biggest fear is, the 4 silver coins I have dug, were accidental, instead of by design. Would love your feedback.

Actually went out nickel conscious today, and found a record 3 for me. So have now found 17, think I'm getting the idea.

Hi coilcop,
Congrats on the XLT and appears your learning it well enough to make some good finds with it.The numbers gordiesgirl shows on her post seems close to what i find in target ranges which is what i look for. Target ranges rather than specific numbers should be ingrained as there are too many variables that can distort the VDI. Soil conditions, target depth, coil size, discrimination patterns, trash density, and ground balance setpoint can influence your VDI readouts as well as your detector settings. The problem finding gold jewelry is deciding how many other than highcoin signals your willing to dig.Finding nickels is a good example as many get tired digging canslaw and other junk down at nickel range. The VDI readings provide a target range but it's amazing what a pocketspill of mixed coins at 4" to 6" will indicate. Found the 5.3 Bullseye or Black max coil to be the best smaller coil for target ID and general use at parks ,schools and other areas with high target density. Good luck. HH Bill |

I've relagated myself to dig everything from now on, even if it means excessive junk. I have some indian pennies, and buried some at 4-8" just to see what I get. I get that static filled signal, with a reading that shouts "junk" to me. Same with the buffalo nickels, so I'm sure I have left some behind. I'm not going to be assuming, or lazy anymore. I will dig it all, if I get 1 surprise out of 100, then I'll be smiling.

Grasshopper, at what depth did you do your test at?
I did a buried test at 7" (true 7") with everything from a 1923 silver dollar, standing liberty, merc, 2 cent piece, etc. with my AC at 73 and my pre-amp at 5 and got nothing. No indication what so ever. ![]() Side note, O/T: To those of you who who were in my OE address book I lost your address due to a computer clean install. Mr. Huddelston, please E-mail me..

Hi Silverblooded,
Just curious about the program and coil your using for your ground testing at 7". My test garden consists of a single zinc penny buried about 6" that was inadvertantly placed close a small piece of iron which makes ID difficult and the XLT with a 5.3 Black Max coil will always produce an audio response and shows a slight iron spread on the signagraph and indicate a fairly consistant 65 to 70 VDI along with the lower ID's depending on the coil approach angle and a depth reading of 7" to 8" due to the smaller coil which is more than enough to prompt a second look for me. I mostly use the base Relic program with a few tweaks based on each site. HH Bill |
