I personally feel Whites did a great job at setting up the initial programs and with the proper coil selection and program choice you should make plenty of good finds.
The Coin and Jewelry and Relic programs are my two favorite starter programs and when hunting trashy areas for coins the first option is tone ID for me. At new sites i usually begin with the 950 coil for quick scanning and once i find a hotspot i use the 5.3 Coil for a more refined hunt.
The Relic program is my favorite overall as it greatly reduces target masking problems (especially with the 5.3 coil) that i've found notorious with the Coin program and also gives you a slight positive ground balance offset which i prefer most of the time.
The easiest way to get better depth is to increase the the AC Sensitivity or Preamp Gain. Is best to practice a bit with each and make small changes then check detector stability. Too much Preamp will produce excessive overload responses on shallow targets.
I tried a number of the custom programs before i had a better understanding of the XLT and many didn't work very well for me but found it interesting how others settup their detectors. Not everyone has the same hunting conditions. Take a good look at page 50 of the XLT manual and observe the program changes then go out and observe what the detector is telling you using each one and go from there. Good Luck, HH Bill
