I find that the depth the detector reaches is also effected by the gound minerization. On a good day with the right moisture content in the ground, I can get 8 -10 inches with my XLT. I also use a modified coin / jewelery program. I found it in a paperback book that my local White's Dealer sold.

Before you do a whole lot of programming change the buried depth to 4 inches and set the XLT on the default coin mode. If it works there then bury it at 6 inches and try it. If it works there ok then we can give you some settings that have worked for us. But unfortunately not all settings work in all parts of the country because of different soils. I have only been detecting since the last week of June so I am no expert but thought this info would be helpful.

ok, first thing, increase your sensitivity to around 70, Try that and see if it works.
Next would be to increase preamp gain, increase to 4. Try that. Next would be to slow down your recovery speed, drop it down to around 15. You will have to slow down your sweep speed. try that and see if the coin will sound off. For got one thing, you did check the area for iron before you buried the coin? If there was a nail or something close to where you put the coin, the iron would cause the blanking.

Just my opinion of course but a newly buried coin at 8" may be hard for many detectors to find depending on soil type and conditions.
I would try either the Coin @Jewelry or the Relic program as they have less discimination built into the program and if using the 950 and all that discrimination in the Coin program the XLT craps out on depth and suffers from too much target masking in my opinion but it's good for cherry picking shallow targets in that mode. You could try Mixed mode to see if the allmetal side picks it up or just use pinpoint to see your getting a depth reading for the fun of it. I agree with LaRoper as far as increasing the AC Sensitivity but just to the point of instability then lower 1 point at a time to stabilize, i usually do this at waist level then adjust to ground conditions if necessary. If you adjust the preamp gain make sure you Ground Balance again especially if you increase the preamp. Just some thoughts. HH Bill |

You may want to try dumping a bucket of water where you buried the coin before digging it up, see if that helps?

i dont want to sound rude but any time ya bury a coin to test. measure its depth.
alot of people are not familuar enough with measurement to make an accurate guess.... 5 inches is not 9 and like wise what your eyes may percieve as 10 inches could easily be over a foot. even game wardens carry tape measures. if it 14 inches to be a keepers and game warden measures 13 and 3/4 you get a heavy fine. it is easyest to dig a hole tamp the loose dirt down to keep coin from slipping down further measure, place coin, cover. i have measured holes i have to dug just to see if my machine was accurate in depth reading. under 6 inches its usually on the money. hope this helps happy huntin
